Olive trees - 2nd year of grafted sapling

Good day to you - No expert, I!

About two years ago or slightly less, I had a professional gardener plant two grafted 1st year saplings in my garden - one in the front facing south with much sun most of the year and significantly more hot, summer sun during the mid-year months. I am no specialist but my understanding is that they are defined as "Syrian" having slender, straight trunks as against the "classic" shorter, stumpy and gnarled variety. The second is planted behind my home and sheltered from excessive sun for most of the day but during the summer catching the afternoon sun as it begins to decline from about 15:00 onwards.

To my surprise and excited pleasure, the tree at the back of the house actually produced 600 gr. of fruit towards the end of 2010, while the tree in front of the house - nothing.

I pruned it modestly early in the year to prevent an unbalanced spread, removing at the same time any dead small branches and twigs.

Many hundreds of other trees in a 1 km radius of where I live are already showing an enormous number of florets while neither of my trees are showing any sign of flowering. In addition, I am perturbed by the appearance of long, stringy shoots with leaves widely spaced along the length.

Can you make any comment on these two points and indicate if something is "going wrong"?

I should be grateful.

Selwyn
