American Elm: How do you know?

Hello All,

I am a little worried about the elms around my house. I have been reading a bit about dutch elm disease, and it looks grim. American elm is probably the third most common tree on my property, surpased only by young sugar maples, and older black cherries. The oldest tree I can find had to have established some time after 1950. The neighbors house was built in 1950 and the wire fence that was put in is smack dab in the middle of the tree. It is a very large tree. All of the other trees are significantly younger than this one. I am located in New York State fifteen miles from the city of poughkeepsie, and 70 miles north of New York City. Is there any way I can tell if the trees are offspring of a tree that survived a wave of disease, perhaps the large tree that I described? Is there any way to find out if the trees are resistant to DED (other than by infecting them)
