Comments (5)I have both and love them both, to me JCs blooms are more petal packed, in more of that antique rosette style bloom, and so the petals are smaller just because there are more of them. HGL has an antique shape to it as well, but more "fluffy" for lack of a better term & with larger & slightly less petals. For me HGL has more solitary blooms where as JC blooms more in clusters, since JC is a floribunda & HGL has been deemed a grandiflora, that makes sense. Also, JCs blooms don't fade as quickly for me as those of HGL, which can almost look bi-color in my garden because the tips of the petals go so distinctly white but stay yellow in the center, I notice yours doesn't look like that so maybe that won't apply to you, my HGL is in full sun...but so is JC... so that may or may not be your experience depending on your sun exposure. JCs blooms start out slightly more golden tone than HGL, and when they do fade after a couple of days, the whole flower fades at the same time, not tips first like my HGL. Also, HGL is much less fragrant than JC in my garden. Both of them are amazing at producing flowers, they are two of my best bloomers! Even in the summer heat! I hope this gives you some useful info! Comments (10)Mariou, What region of the country are in? Most California rosarians do not have to deal with the rampant black spot typical in my zone 6b garden. Their biggest problem is mildew. If you garden in the Mid-Atlantic, for example, you will have to contend with the worst fungal pressures in the country. Roses that are completely clean - no spray - in places like Petaluma CA will defoliate elsewhere. I do not have Julia Child but I have grown Happy Child for years. It is pretty little rose, approximately 2.5 feet tall with an loose, open growth habit. Good repeat bloom and truly lovely flowers. Fragrance is moderate to strong, and Tea-like. The foliage is rather unusual looking, resembling spinach leaves. In my region black spot can be a problem but is resistant to other fungal diseases. To prevent defoliation you would have to spray it with a fungicide every two weeks to control the black spot. About my only real complaint is the vigor. Without disbudding during years one and two, an own root plant will limp along never maturing. It is also a wee bit more sensitive to the cold than your typical English Rose. I lost one during a particularly cold winter, which I quickly replaced in the spring. You would too if you ever saw the blossoms. The yellow color is extremely pure without any secondary tones. Very few roses combine fragrance with such clear, canary yellow color. You can purchase an own root plant of HAPPY CHILD online from Heirloom Roses. Good luck, Patrick...See MoreMolineux compared to Julia Child
Comments (45)I was wondering about whether to plant Julia Child in my yellow/orange border. I have two Molineux and two Golden Celebration, along with Pat Austin, Lady Emma Hamilton(big disappointment) and Amber flower carpet. I think I am going to stick with Molineux. The reaction to Molineux is essentially - is this for real? The form is lovely (upright vase), the disease resistance is excellent - no blackspot to report, and the repeat bloom is nonstop. ALl this with the loveliest most charming flowers. The person who stated that David Austin really got it right with Molineux was spot on....See More'Julia Child'... and I'm an idiot...
Comments (19)Well, Marlorena, I hope you enjoy your Julia, aka Ab Fab (a terrible name, I agree), and share a few photos with us in the future. I love that rose and don't care if everyone in the world owns one (or two). Rarity doesn't necessarily mean something is excellent. Currently I'm in love with Roberto (Roberto Capucci), which makes it sound like I'm having an affair with a sexy young Italian (at my age, no less). I don't have Roberto yet, but I'm going to acquire him this spring, I hope. Heheh. SoFlo, your many Dames sound like my Princess Alexandra of Kent, a rose of many faces and colors. Just like Dames, she can be salmon pink, or a cooler pink, and even a bright coral when it's hottest. Sometimes blooms are large, but when it's hot they are smaller with fewer leaves, and stamens that often show. Currently she is reverting to her spring beauty because the heat is moderating. But at different times in the growing season, one might think she's an entirely different rose than at another point in the season. Diane...See Morenickjoseph Milwaukee, WI
