Help Please Pink Climber

I would like your advice on a pink climbing rose that has continual bloom. Is there such a thing? I am a newbie, and you are the experts. Please help.

Most roses bloom in heavy flushes of two weeks out of six, although the first flush of a climber may last a month and then repeat a bit slower and sparser, because the plant makes so much green growth. A few roses bloom more or less continuously, but then you don't get a lot of flowers at one time, so you may not want that. The huge yellow climber Mermaid is one such.

How much room do you have for the climber? I assume you won't be spraying fungicide?

I am planning to put the climbers on either side of an arbor that is the entry to my garden. I could go to four feet or so, and move daylilies if I needed morespace. These would be the only two roses in that specific area.

I know, the "organic" iny name would indicate no fungicide, but it was a suggested "add on" to kitten when I joined gardenweb. And if I don't spray fungicide, I don't have roses where I live...or, at least, I don't have leaves, so yes, I do use fungicide. I don't, however, use insecticides.

Rebecca, I've had Felix LeClerc for about 9 years and I echo the fantastic comments of everyone about him. He's among the first roses to bloom in late May here in zone 5, and he's totally cane hardy and pretty indestructible. It took about 4-5 years before he rebloomed very well, but now I get blooms pretty steadily into July, and scattered blooms off and on even into November. As for height, I think we'd be in the same boat being in close zones. Felix is hardy to zone 3 at least so I think you're still looking at cane hardiness. Mine is about 8' tall and he puts out laterals pretty well, so if you pull the main canes horizontally along your 8X4' trellis you should be able to get it fairly well covered after a while. Like all climbers, he takes a good 4 years to come into his own so be patient. Also, I find his canes to be pretty stiff so I wouldn't expect to do the zigzag canes you can do with more flexible climbers like Crown Princess Margaretha. You also want to make sure your trellis is pretty strong, given that those sturdy canes can pull down an average wood trellis in the wind. You didn't ask for pictures, but here's one of Felix trying (and not succeeding) to pull down a 6' fake iron (aluminum) fence. You can see that even 4' or so away from the fence he can easily reach the top. For years I didn't realize he was supposed to be a climber so I kept pruning him lower to keep him in line. Fortunately it made him bush out and he's forgiven me since. Mine was from HCR too and he's absolutely fine on his own roots. Have fun Cynthia

You could bring a couple of blooms to the Asheville Blue Ridge Rose Society rose exhibition next weekend ((May 30-31) at the Western North Carolina arboreteum and compare it with some of the blooms there. We're also going to have talks on Rose culture, and late Sat Afternoon, I'm talking about what makes a rose a rose, what a rose wants to do. I've grown America, and I'd rather see the blooms than declare a name based on some of the colors that come through computer moniters.

Rescue them if you have room even if temporary. An 8' climber in our zone is a real asset, and that is one beautiful rose. Is it a once-bloomer? The bloom form is beautiful. Many of the leaves are consistently un-serrated on one side. Don't want to flood your thread with the one I found, but it is somewhat similar, have more shots of the whole bush, etc., think it may be slightly darker. Sorry I don't know what yours (or this one) could be.

Since you have not worked with climbing roses before, those with few-to-no-thorns and flexible canes might be a good place to start.

Consider 'Renae', which is not the most commonly available rose, but it has a few strong virtues: almost completely thornless, very fragrant, and the canes are quite flexible so that it is easy to work with (the thornlessness helps there too). Good bloomer, once established.

Another would be 'Crepuscule', which has the same virtue of thornlessness and has quite good disease resistance. Very good bloomer, once established, though it might be a little large for your arbor.

Keep in mind that climbing roses don't bloom as well when they are young. They tend to build up a large structure of canes (branches) before they turn their energies to flowering. Even a rose that repeats very, very well once established may only bloom a little the first and second years in the ground.

As long as you don't mind coral-pink, Rosarium Uetersen breaks the rules. Always covered in blooms. It gets the most compliments in my garden.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I see Roses Unlimited offers Renae and Rosarium Uetersen, but I haven't found a source for Crepusule.

Either would do nicely, I think.

I can tell you that our "New Dawn" is one of the best you could plant and enjoy. It requires very little care. The blooms are pink and plentiful with dark green foilage. Just fertilize, mulch, and prune later on and you will love them. Lots of thorns so be careful. They are quick growing climbers as well. The "New Dawn" is P. Allen Smith's favorite!

I was going to suggest Renae if you have a small arbor or trellis. I'm afraid New Dawn would crush your structure within a few years. Rosarium Uetersen is a great easy-care rose, but very thorny if the arbor will have much traffic. Mine is normally watermelon pink/red, but in some weathers or climates it is fluorescent coral. Another good short climber is Clair Matin. Go to HelpMeFind for pictures and vendors.

Thank you so much. I have New Dawn on a large arbor. It is doing really well, but it is only a year old. I bought it (HAD to have it) after I saw someone's gorgeous picture on this forum. I believe Renae may be my best bet since this new arbor will be leading into my garden.

New Dawn is not a rose I recommend. We had it at the old house, I've been wanting to get rid of it for years but hubby liked it. I ended up leaving it, no love lost.

Yes, it's pretty when it 1st blooms, but those blooms usually get ruined due to pests. Out of all my pink roses, I don't have many pictures of ND.

From J&P - Dream Weaver - love it.
Another option is to use an Austin rose. There are so many beautiful David Austins that would fit the bill.

Not sure what happened to your New Dawn but ours is wonderful and I would not hesitate to have it grow over an arbor with the fear of the weight. Once again, if P.Allen says it's so, it's so!

I just bought 2 Dream Weavers. The nursery said it would be 3'-5' wide and up to 12' tall, and would grow about 5' the first year. They are beautiful. I love the clusters of large flowers. It is also fairly disease resistant.
