Whats wrong with my iceberg rose bush

Is this black spot or rust or something else? And how should I deal with it?

This is a 4-5 year old iceberg rose bush. In full sun.

It isn't black spot. It looks like a burn of some kind. Did you spray it with anything?

I did spray it with a garden fungicide, one of those "garden safe" ready made sprays about 3 weeks ago. It looks better than it did now.

What should I do now? Should I cut off the burnt foliage? How do I make it healthier?

It sounds like botrytis, controllable with various fungicides. Some Bayer products come to mind for controlling it. Right, don't fertilize until they have recovered and have put out plenty of leaves. Bloom Buster is the wrong kind of fertilizer--regular Miracle Gro or Miracle Gro for Roses is fine, or any reasonably balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 18-6-12. Watering correctly is the most important thing. Keep a 2" mulch of leaves or bark around the roses. When the soil under the mulch feels dry-ish, water thoroughly with 2-3 gallons for small plants or 5 gallons for larger, plus or minus for extremely hot or very mild, cloudy weather. Usually once a week is fine. For new plants, I divide the ration in half and water twice a week.

Hey Kim, The leaves haven't been like this until recently. The bush is bordering a cemented walk (it has been for since I planted it ten years ago). I've never noticed this issue before, whether its summer or winter. I've noticed these leaves and "damaged" roses only recently. Heat could be a reason but November would be a strange time for that to be the specific reason as the climate here is quite pleasant between October to March (we're currently 22 Celsius during the day and 16 at night). Perhaps this has been happening for a while, but I've only noticed it recently due to the roses that either bloom the way you see in the pic or just fall of before even opening up. I haven't done much in terms of care, other than add a new thin layer of soil about once a year. I have gotten ten years of wonderful roses from these two bushes without much care so far, but it looks like I need to do something for them now. There isn't any proper drainage. The soil is about one meter deep, with concrete surrounding it. Wirosarian, The climate here during the Summer months (April-September) ranges from 35 Celsius at night to 50 during the day. These months are spent heavily watering my plants daily (as we don't have any rain during this time either). Winter months are much cooler, 25-0 Celsius and November is when my rose bushes flower, followed by another flowering phase in March. Thanks for the replies! Thank you guys so much for the compliments! I am very proud of how she turned out this year. I had some learning blues last year and she had holes all throughout her leaves from pests. I trimmed her down and she had a nice comeback before the season was over. She seems to be a tough one. This year, I was better prepared and she has started off great. I noticed some aphids, but got them under control quickly with soapy water (Dawn) spritzed on her for a couple days. I have not used any fertilizer recently. The only thing I've done is sprinkled some Blood meal over the soil in this flower bed section before laying down new mulch. I followed the directions on the bag and I did this about 6-7 weeks. Do you think this may be the reason?? Ingrid, I wish I could move her but I live in a townhouse community and this is the flower bed we are given and we are not allowed to plant things outside of our small assigned flower bed area attached to townhouse. :-( I gave her a nice drink of water today after I read about the salt thing. Should I do this daily? I will be gone for the weekend and there will be no rain. I have some day lilies that I think will bloom this year off to the right. They should be yellow with a red/orange center. So far, they seem very sturdy and have not been effected negatively by the blood meal. I forgot to mention that she gets full sun for most of the day until about 4-5pm where she starts to have some shade. Not sure if that is relevant info tot his problem.

Yep -- whatever it was probably had oil in it, and then we got those very hot days a week or so back. Burned. Don't worry about cutting it off. The green parts of the leaves still work, and will help the plant grow more foliage to cover that up eventually.

And don't spray that stuff again if it's going to be hot while the material is still present.

I agree with seil and kstrong -- the first thing I thought of when I looked at your photo was spray burn. It will recover.

Thank you for all your help. At least now I know what it is!

I have seen on this forum that the Bayer concentrate for shrubs etc (the one that is only at lowes) is a good spray for roses. How do you guys use it in the hot summers so as not to cause a leaf burn?

sonaliagrawal, there are a few different Bayer products. The best for disease control is the Bayer Advanced Disease Control. You mix it with water and spray it. It's not as dangerous as an oil spray as far as leaf burn, but it's best to spray it early in the day, while the plants are still dewey and the sun isn't high yet.

I took a chance this weekend, I was all set to spray and filled up my sprayer and one of the hoses was leaking badly. DH was able to put a new hose clamp on it and it was fine, so I sprayed in the middle of the day. The sun was in and out, so it didn't seem to damage anything. But I usually do it before 9am.

I also use Bayer Advanced Disease control, and I spray late in the day after I come home from work. At that point in the day, all of the roses are in shade and will be for the next several hours. (Nightime provides LOTS of shade... :) )

REALLY -- Iceberg, in California, doesn't NEED that.

The damaged leaves will fall (you can remove the worst of them if you want to). New leaves will come in, and if you just leave it alone, and hose wash it, it will be fine. That's why it's favored for landscaping shopping centers and parking lots! It doesn't need a lot of pruning, and it doesn't need spraying.

That being so, do you REALLY want to use this stuff in your garden? Before you decide, read the chemical safety data sheet.
