Continuing to clear up my composting vision

I cannot thank you all enough for all the help you have given me, both by directly answering my questions and by simply having been here to answer other peoples posts over the years.

IÂve scouted out my yard rather thoroughly, and I think I have the perfect place for a compost pile. On one side of my yard itÂs a little higher than the rest, so I figure that will equal good drainage. It is technically the front yard, but the way the land lays and the way the trees are all positioned in my yard and the neighbors, you wouldnÂt be able to see the pile from the street, and the neighbors should only be able to see it if they make an effort to look for it. So visually a good spot as far as the neighborhood is concerned.

The area backs up to the fence to the back yard, and the other side is a perfect area for a shredded leaf pile. I believe that there is enough room for a three pile system, if not, there is definitely room for two. I can access the piles from the backyard due to the positioning, which is fortuitous, as the back yard is more easily accessed from the kitchen (hence the leaf pile in the back yard dump the kitchen scraps, cover, get on with life).

My only concern is that the house would be one of the "borders" to the pile. Our house is brick, and while I am not a brick specialist, it looks to be in wonderful condition, no cracks or lines that I can see. Will the compost pile be bad for the house? As I said, it cant be seen from the street and the neighbors would have to try and see it, so IÂm not worried about a "dirty" look, just donÂt want to compost the house!

My second question is much easier, what do you guys do with the kitchen scraps. Will a bucket with a lid be ok as long as it emptied regularly? I donÂt want to stink up the house, but I also know air is a must in composting without stench.

Thanks again!!

Char
