Caldwell Pink - climber?

I have had a nice old well-behaved CP in my yard for about 10 years. Got it at a rose rustler plant sake in Texas.
Today I noticed that it has sent canes at least 12 ft long into a neighboring climber. There are several canes, all healthy and covered with flowers.
If this is a sport, does it have either interest or value, besides to me?.

Nikki -- "Caldwell Pink" was identified as 'Pink Pet,' A 1928 Polyantha, later re-classed by ARS as a China.

There is a known climbing sport, which is listed as being in commerce -- so perhaps your bush form has sported.

I am very fond of Caldwell Pink. This year I purchased two more and replaced some roses that have not done well for me. I will have a bed of 5 Caldwell Pinks together. From a distance the rose has almost a lavender pink glow. I do think it is beautiful.

I wonder if you could find some information on HMF about the climber. Personally, I don't know what it takes for a rose to be a climber - I do not understand how and when the canes harden and climb. It is an interesting thought.

It might be fun to have a sport that not many people have.

In Texas it is sold by ARE.

The "Caldwell Pink" and 'Pink Pet' situation is odd -- They are surely the same rose, in that they grow and flower identically, although I'm not aware that anyone has actually tested their DNA (we should do that). HOWEVER, what we can be quite sure of is that the correct, historical name cannot be 'Pink Pet', which was a China, and this rose has little in common with a China, other than its quick repeat bloom. The leaves, prickles, flowers, etc., are all wrong for a China. Rather, it appears to be a repeat-flowering R. setigera hybrid, maybe with some Polyantha in its background. So at least with "Caldwell Pink" there is truth in advertising, in that the name indicates that we don't know its historic identity. 'Pink Pet' was given to the rose, I believe by Florida rosarians, to have a "legal" name under which to show it in ARS-sanctioned rose shows. In any case, there is no direct, proven (nor even suggested) link between this rose and the original 'Pink Pet'.

Jackie, I have a bed of 5 Caldwell Pink roses. I think they are beautiful, and when they are in full bloom, they are especially beautiful. Michael Shoup at Antique Rose Emporium found it, and named it. However, the ARS says it is Pink Pet. Therefore, if we take the blooms to a rose society function, we are require to call it Pink Pet. In my opinion if I purchase it with one name, I do not feel good about calling it something else. I like to repeat a rose in a bed. I have also done this with Perle d'Or (I don't want to get up, and look up the exact spelling). Your blooms are lovely. Our zone is 7A, a perfect zone for this rose. Your blooms are lovely. Sammy

I have a Caldwell Pink purchased 2 years ago from Moore Farms, a private garden in Lake City, SC. I think it must be the "climbing" version because it has put out 8-10' canes, and to add insult to injury, it only had one flush of blooms last year. I have left it mostly unpruned and will see what it does this spring/summer. If it blooms more this year, I'll probably move it because it is too big for the spot I gave it. If it is a once bloomer, I'll SP it! Did you see the entry on HMF? The description says perpetual bloomer, but a comment says the opposite.

This is my 3 y/o own root Caldwell Pink. It has been totally disease free and in constant bloom. I haven't pruned it since I planted it but plan on giving a trim this spring. I planted it in front of an old empty well that is in the middle of the property and it has done its job by hiding it very well, as well and looks pretty at the same time.I think it will make a lovely hedge for you.

I have the climber, and it's a thorny, aggressive mess. This is its fourth year, and it has finally put out a few scattered blooms. It does not repeat and isn't nearly as pretty as the bush form, in my opinion.
