Chainsaw Mask w/ or w/o Helmet?

I was thinking about putting a chainsaw mask on my xmas list. I normally just wear headphones. Sometimes I get a plastic face shield out of the shop but it's always very hot here and you sweat into it, plus debris and it doesn't take long to turn into a mess you can't see thru.

So I was thinking about those wire-mesh-screen type shields which come with headphones and a helmet or just w/ headphones.

Q1: How does the mesh style work (compared to a plastic shield)? I'm thinking it can be more readily handled w/ gloved hands, not going to 'smear' etc...

Q2: With or without a helmet? The helmet would seem to add weight and heat and I only seem to use the saw once or twice a year is all these days. Helmet seems like overkill - it's not like I have all the safety chaps and such.

I use my mesh style helmet w/muffs as much when brush cutting then sawing. Yeah, you are right on about being able to handle the guard and not smearing it etc. It stays cool enough, but I'm not using it a lot in a hot environment. If you are getting down into your cutting, you may want to consider chaps. It's because I don't cut a lot anymore that I wear mine. Plus the terrain I am in doesn't hardly have a level spot on it.

From horror stories and almost gotya's. You really can't be too safe. I like the screen, helmet kinda heavy, but if falling objects are happening again can't be too safe? I am also concerned with the saw kick back and cutting limbs down on the ground. This IMO most dangrous saw getting jerked or dipped close to your legs or feet.

I had some realistic work and experimenting today. Splitting and stacking my 2012 harvest of green Live Oak (hauled in 3 loads, in 2 days from 3 blocks away thanks to a tree trimmer). The final cutting/splitting/stacking led to work with the approx 2 face cords as follows. The use of my Poulan S25 that I just cleaned and added a new clutch sprocket. A log splitter just rebuilt/etc and added hydro fluid filter. A young body and my body completed the last half of all splitting/stacking after my needed cutting in 1.5 hr. The cutting/splitting/stacking went great but the saw was a mess. Such a mess, I'll plan to use a small engine cleaner/solvent/attachment with compressed air or a pump de-greaser and compressed air (after finding the possible cause first). The manuel oiling was working but I detected the automatic was not and feeding wire to clear it d/n help. My question w/o searching, will the automatic oiling cause bar oil to come out at joints/etc? I was seeing excessive ext bar oil and the same old unusual mess I just cleaned. I'll take a break and go for the filter of the automatic oil as years ago that was full of sawdust. I used a hacksaw to remove the boss around the adjustment screws and notched each adjustment screw. Trivial - just a couple few minutes. Opening up the H screw about 3/4 a turn made the difference. I still may need to tweak the idle settings a tad but it runs decently enough. It definitely vibrates more than one would want to experience for extended usage. Rather than running it dry before storing - I dumped the unused gas back into a storage container and hit the primer to pull out most of the remaining fuel from the carb/lines.

Thanks again for all the input, everyone. After sharing some jars from my test batch I can definitely say that I'm going with the low-sugar this year. My main reason for wanting it was simply the amount of sugar in the normal Ball recipes - I tend to give away quite a bit of what I make and the only complaint I've recieved, quite regularly, is that it's too sweet. The reduced sugar level definitely lets more of the fruit flavors shine through, without the overpowering taste of sugar. For reference, I used the recipe in the box, 4 cups black raspberry juice (from ~1.5 quarts of berries and enough water to come halfway up them in the pan) and 3 cups of sugar - Yeild was around 2.5 pints...I could have probably got some more, but I didn't realize how fast this stuff jels up. Normally, after finishing the rolling boil, I let it sit for about 2-3 minutes - this way the foam forms a kind of "skin" and is much easier to skim off - The low sugar set so quick that I lost nearly a quarter of a pint just in skimming th foam. ...Will be clearing out my freezer this week and making up some jelly - Should get around 10-12 pints each of black raspberry and blackberry with what's in there now, and yes, I will be firing up the water canner. Thinking about taking some down to the local farmer's market as well to see if the owners would be interested in selling any. -Thanks again for the info, I do appreciate the comments and concerns...

My daughter who is fully vaccinated will be visiting next week and although we made the decision before the CDC guidelines were released, they actually dovetail quite closely with what we'd planned. Since my husband has also had his shots 2/3 of us are fully vaccinated and the third person-me-is not in a high risk category. So we will forego masks in the house and I told her she doesn't need to take a COVID test before boarding her plane. My husband will pick her up at the airport after a direct flight from DC to Miami; they will come to our house where she will take off the clothes she wore traveling and shower down there, then come upstairs to our area, which is where the guest room is located. Her travel clothes can be washed downstairs so they never have to come anywhere near me. Which is probably overkill but why not? We feel comfortable with those plans. While I understand and don't disagree with the CDC advocating caution I do feel there is somewhat of a risk that by not promulgating ANY benefits of getting vaccinated, they aren't doing much to encourage people to do so. Frankly if after being vaccinated you still are told you might/probably can spread it, that you can't stop wearing masks with your family inside, etc....lots of people who are assiduously sheltering in place and staying away from others may figure why bother. My theory is that in the interests of not encouraging recklessness, the CDC is erring a bit too far on the cautious side. I'll put on my amateur immunologist hat and say I seriously doubt vaccinated people can spread the disease--there doesn't seem to be creditable data showing that to be the case. Suspect at some point that will be the scientific conclusion too. OTOH after I'm vaccinated I will not stop wearing my mask when I go outside and following other safety recommendations on distancing etc until scientific concensus indicates it is safe to do so. Luckily my age group is eligible beginning next Monday so I hope to test this plan very soon :)

Ok, good subject here. I'm home from work due to a medical condition which doesnt allow me to drive. Meantime, my roof needs re-shingling per my home insurance. Yep, you guessed it , I staged the roof and stripped it with the help of my SIL, just like I did 25 yrs ago. Except I've gotten a little creaky. And man do I ache and cramp. The lesson has been driven home. Ive got blow downs all around me from Irene and other storms . This is where I get my wood, harvesting blow downs. I use the term blow down, instead of another name, widow maker. I've been learning as I go, the craft of cutting up a leaner without getting clobbered. I use muffs, but I wear glasses, my regulars, to see. Goggles steam up and impair vision . But a mesh mask like a fencer's. That is worth considering. Next comes kevlar. Thanks for something to Google up info on.

I bought the mesh guard/hardhat/earmuff combo and it works fine with the chainsaw. Sometimes I wear it when cutting the grass, but not in the hot weather. I have two other pairs of earmuffs for lawn work.

My chain saw chaps I only bought after nicking my leg. Costs fifty bucks -- the emergency room visit was $800.

Yep I just got a chainsaw and after reading about E-room visits, went ahead and purchased some safety gear. You can buy an entire kit that includes helmet\mask, chaps and glasses. See link below:

I was a logger before safety gear was common and I have the stiches to prove it. We got paid by the cord so speed made money. Now I just cut my fire wood and clear my own land when needed. I wear steel toe boots, chaps, kevlar gloves, hard hat/screen/ear muffs ect.. To many of the people I worked with then can't work now.
