The way I understand it is that the threat would be to those that are high risk and not vaccinated.

A vaccinated person can still carry the virus and spread it.

If they are in a high risk group, I would not take the chance. According to the CDC guidelines released yesterday, it is still dangerous for those at high risk (not vaccinated).

Dr. Fauci said himself, they do not have the DATA/Science to back this up-they are making a judgment call at this point, about the vaccinated + unvaccinated.

And since the vaccine is only 95% effective (or a little less) from preventing the virus, she still can be at risk for getting it. The vaccine is supposed to lessen the severity if she does get it, but I don't think there are guarantees at this point. If I were her, I'd probably get together, but insist that both wear masks.

I prefer to think of it as an educated guess.

Of which, there are many educated immunologists with differing educated guesses.

I prefer to listen to immunologists that also have common sense. My doctor and a team of doctors in my state I have been following, have not been wrong on one single Covid issue yet. No joke. And, I cannot say the same for Fauci and CDC of which, are very slow in getting information out, which by that time, is very outdated for the public.

For instance, masks in the beginning. Wouldn't common sense tell you that masks work? My doctor(s) were telling us this from day 1. I know the CDC has to be very careful, and want to wait until data comes out, but truly, there are other very educated doctors out there, that know more, at a much quicker pace than they do.

So much of this is interpretation, guesswork and hopefulness. But 20/20 hindsight will come into play eventually. 50 years from now, people will look back on initial recommendations... like wear a mask vs. drink bleach. NO NO NO a vaccinated/infected recovered person DOES NOT carry the virus! Where do you people get this junk science? The only reason I get vaccinated for the seasonal flu is so I don't carry it. I have never ever had the seasonal flu, don't plan on getting it, same with COVID but I wanted to be free of spreading it so I am now vaccinated. There is no point in vaccination, of herd immunity if we can still spread it!! Tell your mom she is free to come and go w/o FEAR!! There is plenty of solid Science out there--Fauci will not go down in History as THE VOICE of COVID--he sold out and is confused more often than not.

Arcy you may want to check that statement. Even better - provide a reputable link. Even after vaccination, while rare, it is possible to catch Covid, but the symptoms should be considerably milder with a lower transmission rate. Although initial reports show that these vaccines are exceptionally more effective than a flu shot there is no absolute guarantee that you can't get the virus just like getting the flu after a flu shot.

And it's the reason why precautions like mask wearing hand washing and keeping a safe distance are still recommended afterwards. Scientists are still learning how long the immunity lasts and how effective these vaccines are against the newer strains of the virus.

We're still being recommended that if you are vaccinated and are with those who aren't that everyone still wears a mask and physical distances.

I think I heard them say that if grandparents are vaccinated they can see their young grandkids who aren't because they supposedly aren't major transmitters of covid.

It's going to be a couple of more months before I get vaccinated. Even though the doses are here the government is making a boondoggle of distribution.

All the first responders and care facilities etc are done (my sister who is a dental hygienist got hers last week) and now they're onto the general population.

Olliesmom -- I've seen you an other harp on the fact that Fauci was telling us not to rely on masks but to stay home as much as possible. We all know that what he was able to say publicly was dictated by a president who had already given a recorded interview to Bob Woodward acknowledging tha COVID was much worse than the flu but he didn't want to frighten people so he wasn't telling us the truth. We all also remember all too well that masks and all PPE were in woefully short supply. If you listen to all of Fauci's interviews and not just a 5-10 second clip, he specifically said that the masks were needed by first responders. Medical professionals were wearing masks for days, a week or more and getting sick. Some died. It was a matter of saving the lives that could save our lives. If they told us all to wear an N95 when there weren't enough for hospitals, the toilet paper hoarding would have been the least of our concerns. It took time and trials to learn what type and to what degree masking could help the rest of us while not taking protection away from the medical folks and first responders. Maybe you need to remember the rest of the story. Context and completion matter.

Sushi, there is some truth in that -- small minds don't have room to change direction. But facts do matter and I will stand up for the truth.

It's cult-like the way people follow Fauci. People need to at least question him, at times. I am not biased enough as some are here that mistakes weren't made in previous administration. But be honest about Fauci. He has shown us he is not the smartest specialist. He has not fared well the last few viruses, as well as the leader of this administration.

And, what impact the crisis on the border is going to have-just while we are getting on our feet, is simply ridiculous. He has lost control of the situation and anyone with half a brain would know this was going to happen. Did you really not realize this would happen?? Let's see if anyone asks Fauci about this crisis at the border. Wonder if his bias will show?

My daughter who is fully vaccinated will be visiting next week and although we made the decision before the CDC guidelines were released, they actually dovetail quite closely with what we'd planned. Since my husband has also had his shots 2/3 of us are fully vaccinated and the third person-me-is not in a high risk category. So we will forego masks in the house and I told her she doesn't need to take a COVID test before boarding her plane.

My husband will pick her up at the airport after a direct flight from DC to Miami; they will come to our house where she will take off the clothes she wore traveling and shower down there, then come upstairs to our area, which is where the guest room is located. Her travel clothes can be washed downstairs so they never have to come anywhere near me. Which is probably overkill but why not?

We feel comfortable with those plans. While I understand and don't disagree with the CDC advocating caution I do feel there is somewhat of a risk that by not promulgating ANY benefits of getting vaccinated, they aren't doing much to encourage people to do so. Frankly if after being vaccinated you still are told you might/probably can spread it, that you can't stop wearing masks with your family inside, etc....lots of people who are assiduously sheltering in place and staying away from others may figure why bother.

My theory is that in the interests of not encouraging recklessness, the CDC is erring a bit too far on the cautious side. I'll put on my amateur immunologist hat and say I seriously doubt vaccinated people can spread the disease--there doesn't seem to be creditable data showing that to be the case. Suspect at some point that will be the scientific conclusion too.

OTOH after I'm vaccinated I will not stop wearing my mask when I go outside and following other safety recommendations on distancing etc until scientific concensus indicates it is safe to do so.

Luckily my age group is eligible beginning next Monday so I hope to test this plan very soon :)

I met a medical professional who said that after she got her first vaccination she came down with Covid-19 (not as a result of the vaccination, but she probably had been exposed and was incubating when she got the vaccine) and was ill for a month. She can't get her second vaccination until 60 days have elapsed. Her four children also tested positive for Covid-19, but didn't have symptoms.

Why would the arrival of illegal migrants have an impact? Given the situation in the US, they're more likely to catch it after they arrive than bring it in with them.

I would not be overly concerned if Mom got together with A&B. If Mom is vaccinated, she is protected. If A&B have both already had COVID then they most likely still have antibodies protecting them.
