White Double Delight Echinacea

I saved seed from all of my coneflowers last year. This year I'm getting some interesting results. Here's a white Double Delight coneflower. It looks just like the regular ones, but the blooms are white instead of pink! I'll add some more photos when the bloom opens all the way, but it's for sure that this is going to be a pretty white bloom!

That is awesome echinaceamaniac! I like how it has only a single row of petals. Have you considered becoming an echinacea breeder? ;-)

Experience With Green Jewel or Pink Double Delight Echinacea?

kimnc7, I have double delight and it is the best new coneflower on the market. I've never seen a bad one. It and Coconut Lime are the healthiest and both return well. I'm in the same zone as you. I don't like the Green Jewel because it looks like Aster Yellows blooms! LOL. It and Green Envy are ugly to me because my friend had Aster Yellows in her coneflowers and it looked just like those plants! It could cause you confusion if some of your other plants got Aster Yellows. Also: How could you tell if a Green Coneflower has Aster Yellows? The blooms are already the look of that disease. I'd be scared to grow them.

I advise giving it the royal treatment this year and see if it doesn't noticeably improve next year--it third year. Third year (or older) plants often outgrow some of their earlier "problems." As Buford suggested, give it a good afalfa feed (pellet, meal, or "tea")now and in about another month. I'd add that you should combine that with an organic feed like RoseTone (monthly until mid-August), and water it a lot. After a season of that, it should be a much improved plant by next year. Oh yes--you do have it in at least 6 hours of sun, don't you? It likes sun. And keep it healthy by spraying Bayer Advanced Garden Disease Control for Roses and Flowers, as suggested above. Good luck. I couldn't find the double here locally. It's on my wish list. Seeing these photos, I may have to order it online next spring. The color of the flowers is really great. It looks shorter than most of the other coneflowers. Looks like a front-of-the-border plant as Jersey shows in the photo. Does the original orange cone ever come through as the season progresses? christinmk, When that bloom opens the rest of the way it will have a white pom pom bloom in the middle.

I have been crossing these just for fun though! I have found the plants I create myself are healthier than the ones I buy. I think it's because the ones you buy are tissue cultured. That process isn't as good as they say!

Do you have a guide or instructions for how you crossbreed the coneflowers? I bet that would be an interesting read!

That is a pretty flower - I look forward to its full, double version.
