Any suggestions for this bed?

Hubby and I are working on a new bed and I need some suggestions on plants. This area gets evening sun and very little dapple moring sun. I need something that can with stand the heat of the evening sun but grow with the small amount of sun any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I am in NY so my suggestions are not as helpful as those from someone more familiar with your local ecology. Also bear in mind that my preference is for native plants. From what I remember, there are lots of nice plants native to your area but I can't remember what they are off hand. Clethra Alnifolia does well here. Spice bush does well in shade. Red Bud trees are always nice. Native witch hazels are nice. I have been pushing red osier dogwood in all my other posts so I'll reccommend it to you too - especially if you have a wet area. In somewhat shady areas you can put in some spring ephemerals like blood root, dutchman's breaches, and mayapples. A trellis with dutchman's pipe vine by the house could be nice. Taxus tend to be a little too common here.

Roses love water, so a drought tolerant plant might not appreciate being next to a properly watered rose. The nursery in Santa Fe is a good suggestion for plants, but you will need to be mindful of what type of culture each of the plants you buy will need versus your established roses. If you can post a picture of your roses on the rose gallery someone might be able to identify them for you. And remember not all roses are tall big bushy things. You can often incorporate miniature roses along with them as many of the miniature roses grow much shorter. Just remember that "miniature" in the rose world refers to the size of the blooms not the size of the plant, so check to make sure that any miniature you buy has a short growth habit.

Ooooh, Johnny Jump Ups (viola tricolor)...one of my all time faves. But it would take a lot of them to fill a whole bed, maybe. I suppose it gets too cold where you are for impatience, Nova? Those bloom well into the winter months for me, if we don't get a hard freeze. I always grow nasturtiums in the sun, though. Never tried 'em in shade. (LOVE those leaves in sandwiches and salads!) Sweet alyssum would hold up through winter, I think. It would look great with violas, too. Hope you get more suggestions here! Keep us posted on what you choose. Marcia

When to plant and how to prepare soil for fall bulb planting???

Right now is the time to plant bulbs. I planted 700 tulips last year and lots of people would stop by to let me know they were taking the long way home to pass by and see the garden. It was a lot of fun. I just added some bagged top soil and compost without really bothering too much about quantities. You plant them at twice the depth of the size of each bulb - I mean, if the bulb is 2 inches in diameter, you plant them 6 inches deep. Good luck! And don't forget to add bone meal to the planting holes. I actually finished planting late October last year. You have to plant before the first frost. And please get one of these bulb planters you step on. They are so much better than digging by hand. Though when you find a stone, it's always a pain.

Kandy, I would paint the white lattice the same color as your porch railing so it would unify the backdrop for the plants and visually recede making the plants stand out. I would ask on the rose forum for suggestions for shade tolerant climbing roses to plant for a climb up the left (as you look at the picture) front post. There are many roses that are once bloomers that would love this setting.There are repeat bloomers too but the once bloomers give you a greater chance for good fragerance. A Clematis companion to climb up through the rose for bloom during and after the rose bloom would be lovely. All the other plants suggested above are great. I had Little Joe and he aint so little so put him to the back. He has beautiful foliage and a nice structure even when not in bloom. Love your fountain, do birds use it? Good luck it is a pretty setting.
