Haven't done mail order in a long time...

Seems like there should be a better way to ship. My plants were in 3-cell packs. They were upright in the box with packing peanuts on top. The poor leaves were mangled and crushed by the peanuts. Why don't they protect the plants with cardboard or stiff plastic sleeves? If these plants weren't on sale, I'd be a little miffed.

Umm . . . sounds like Bluestone? I hate those peanuts! I think we all should get on their case about this. Lately I've ordered from a bunch of other sources, and nobody else I've ordered from packs like that anymore. I've seen brilliant packing jobs from large to small operations, so there's no excuse.

I hate, hate, hate those Bluestone peanuts! We live on the shore & there's always either a breeze or it's downright windy. So, I can't open the box outside. I've got to open it in the kitchen & make a terrible mess. Then, trapse through the house to get all the plants outside. It's a lot of extra work & did I mention it is messy?

But, Bluestone sends very healthy plants that take hold in my garden quickly. So, I tolerate the peanuts, sorta, with an occassional rant.

EEEEEuck! what vendor was this, I hope you don't mind me asking Susan? I think any band sent too small shouldn't be sent unless it has enough strong,large enough viable leaves to survive the UPS journey. Why some vendors don't follow this rule of thumb is beyond me. LittleTXYard, it's a great idea to keep taking photos just in case. At first when I was reading this post I was thinking what??? bands this late in the season? until I checked the zones and I thought ahhh, now I understand. I think as long as there's enough strong leaves on the band you should be o.k. It's when you get lots of shriveling and sickliness that's when I feel you are entitled for a refund or exchange, even if the rose were to survive a few months later. Weak roses take some time to re-cover and normalize and for cold zoners this is not a good scenario. To me a rose needs to be of decent health and size to be sent out. I have seen some of Vintages' baby bands and they look fantastic. In the future, if I ever go with baby bands I'm getting Vintage bands.

opuntia pads haven't done anything yet

Blut, your pads are rooting outside? I've never tried rooting Opuntia outdoors, but started a few in pots.. The first 6 months, two pads didn't do anything, but looked fine..no rot and firm. I added Superthrive and a few weeks later a baby pad started growing from one of the pads..I thought the baby-less pad was dead, but a wk or so later, it too put out a baby. The only thing I'd have done different is, even though the opuntia is hardy, living in z6, I'd have rooted in the house..After roots formed, possibly the second year, weather permitting, planted in the garden. Good luck..as long as the pads look healthy, and feel firm, they're alive..Toni

off topic... I have to say that the dead cat product videos have NOTHING on the "Ken and Barbie as Greek heroes in mythology" videos I received as projects when I taught English in my past life. This generation is really dragging our culture downhill. You haven't seen art until you have seen a bathtub full of toy boats--one in flames--representing the attack on Troy. Thanks, Karin and I hope you have a nice weekend too! Very nice pictures of your friend's hostas, thank you! If that is a Victory in the second last photo, it is a beauty. I have 8 of the hostas on your list starting with Deane's Dream. I saw it in a new hosta book my daughter gifted me years ago and the description of Aqua-blue leaves got imbedded in my brain (since around 2011). While we were at Hosta Choice Gardens for our first visit, my youngest daughter discovered one for sale and brought it to my attention. It was a greenhouse I hadn't popped into yet (saving it for next visit) and I was ready to go and cash out. At that point I already had 17 plants in the cart and was stalling ... but when she said, "Mom, you've been talking about this one for years now, just get it!!" Every time I look at this pretty hosta, I thank my daughter for finding it for me. :-) I also have from your list ES, F&I, MS, RE and Wheee! Karin, without a doubt you are going to be one very, very happy hostaholic when your packages start arriving at your doorstep this spring!!! Enjoy!

I just got a Bluestone order, my first mail order for perennials. The peanuts do seem a little weird. I might return the box to get a coupon for free shipping, as long as I can use it at next year's 50% off sale.

The plants were overall very healthy and even a little bigger than I expected, and they are all planted and seem to be settling in nicely.
