Using compost or soil with animal feces is always risky because animal parasites often use soil as a shelter before they (or their eggs) can meet up with a host. Roundworm is a good and disgusting example that has spread throughout the U.S. via animal feces (primarily dog and raccoon). Roundworm eggs can remain viable in soil or compost for several years, long after the poop is gone. The most practical solution is to wash your produce in soapy water to remove any dirt, eggs, bacteria, etc., but you might also want to keep your dog waste out of your compost for your vegetable garden.

I never intended for this pile to be compost, that's why there's dog poo in it. It started as just a convenient place to dump my leftover leaves and other yard waste that I don't put it my main compost bin. But now the debris pile is getting a little too big, so if possible I'd like to turn it into a compost pile and put it to good use. It's just that I've been mixing dog poop in with the leaves for the past year, so I'm worried about contamination. As far as I know, my dog is healthy, but I'm still not very keen on taking any unnecessary risks. I rinse my vegetables, but I don't use any soap.
If the existing pile is salvageable, I'll turn it into compost and find a better place to dispose of my dog's waste (he's a corgi, so there isn't a ton of it). There aren't many greens in the pile, so it probably won't be ready to use until next year. Will a year be long enough for all the "bad stuff" to die off?

Why do people worry about domestic pets when wild birds, skunks, coyotes, and raccoons are out there crapping in the vegetable patch?

If the animal is worm-free, the compost will be worm-free too. If the dog has worms, the worm eggs and segments will be all over the yard, not just in the feces.

Compost it and use it.

We have a garden plot, and we grow tomatoes, swiss chard, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. We also have a raspberry patch, and many blueberry shrubs. I would feel OK about using your composted dog manure on the raspberry patch, in the fall, after the bed was cut down, and I would also use it around the blueberry shrubs. But I would not use it on the garden plot.

Even if you don't put it on the vegetable garden it can feed trees or the grass.

I compost dog sheet on two year cycles. 12 months of feeding and 12 months of reducing. Built on pavers, the bins turn into worm city. After 12 months of worm city it looks like chocolate cake. Construct carefully keeping it covered and water. No turning.

I'm keeping the dog sheet out of the water shed, landfills and away from everyone else.

Your dog lives very close to you and, as the study posted by borderbarb indicates, the dog stool can have potential disease pathogens that will infect humans. While the wild animals might contibute some their waste wil not be nearly as concentrated in one place as your pets will be and while a small concern is not nearly of concern as your pets stool.

I'm sure there are lots of critter wastes left in my garden by rabbits, deer, possum, etc., but maybe the danger is in the dosage. Concentrated composted pet waste holds bacteria for a long, long time (links to research below).

As long as you aren't eating the compost, I'm not sure what the concerns are?

My dog sleeps on the bed with me and always will- do I really want to worry about fecal matter out in the yard? Even more, if your dog or cat comes in the house their fecal matter is all over- you can tell yourself otherwise if it makes you feel better but it's there nevertheless. Why worry so much?

Been doing composting it my entire life with no problems. I do make sure it's a year or more from bin one to bin three, just in case. My Dad used to just bury it directly in the garden, which I don't recommend, but none of us ever got sick.

Here is the rule of thumb - manure from herbivoires (cows, goats, chickens, rabbits, most birds) is fine. Their gut is essentially pre-composting the material for you. Carnivoire poop, on the other hand, should be avoided because it can contain parasites. That means no feces from dogs, cats, humans, or tigers. It doesn't mean that it will turn your vegetables into poison, but it is introducing a risk that doesn't exist with excrement from plant-eating species.
