Can you Explain????

Greetings,

I have a beautiful bunch of 'David' phlox. Every year just before they bloom, random stems start to decline....yellowing on the leaves, stems turn brownish. It only happens on a few in each bunch. I have to cut them out. What is going on here when the rest of the clump looks healthy?

I can't explain, but I can commiserate. A handful of stems wilt and dry up each year. Luckily, the clump vigor doesn't seem to be affected.

I can't explain it either, but I have a "nuclear" David phlox that gets huge every year.

It was well over 4 feet in that pic.

Every year however, it gets terrible mildew, browning lower stems & leaf dop at the bottom only.

I spray it with baking soda & water, and it doesn't help. I even tried adding milk. Nadda. The plant still goes on like nothing's wrong. So I try my best to ignore it. It probably *should* be moved as an encroaching shrub is getting awfully close. I know David wants good air circulation. However it performs like crazy where it is, so I leave it alone.

And if it took over someone's backyard I think someone wasn't paying enough attention, no? Thanks for the link. Nice photos of Hall's honeysuckle. I love the flowers of this plant, but I can't seem to get it to flourish the way I'd like in a container. I'd settle for the leaves to stop yellowing after a dose of fertilizer. The weather has been warming so I'm waiting to see improvement.

There is a color palette generator in encycolorpedia, but it is far too technical for me to understand...someone like funcolors would I'm sure. But it allows you to generate a color palette using various settings and yielding various results with hex codes. It works off of a url only though.

Thank you ernie. I do not think I can make any decisions right now good or bad. I cared for her so long through her aging and illness that so many things went undone. I have a good awareness of what being a medical, elderly advocate which i am going to put to use when I get my head and heart healed a little more. Thank you for thinking of something that could help. I will definitely take you up on the offer. I have been known to do some pretty dumb things and I was not grieving. Yes I do have very, very fond memories and in the end she made me respect and love her more than I thought was possible with the strength and dignity she showed the last year of her life. I just cannot wait for the tears to stop. Just someone saying hello to you can send you into babbling crying idiot like I am doing now in this post.

Another question for hc mcdole. Something strange is going on with one of my cuttings. The leaf died, but the cut end is still growing roots like crazy... And now small green things that definitely look like leaves are growing out of the cut end... UNDER WATER. I am so confused. On all the other cuttings, new growth sprouted from the petiole. Tried to get photos from a few different angles to show you. I'm not really sure what to do with it. Cut the original dead leaf off and bury the roots, leaves and all, in some soil? It seems odd to bury leaves but you can see from the way it's growing that I don't think its possible to bury the roots without burying the leaves. Or should I wait till a rhizome forms under water before touching it? Has this ever happened to you?

Ditto to your experience. I remember that happening for two years, and either I got used to it, or it was minor last season.

I have not found this variety to be as carefree and quick to grow as Bright Eyes, Eva Cullem....yes I know they're not white, which would be the main reason to buy David.

I noticed this problem recently and now know it isn't just me. I feel better now, thanks.

Thank you all for sharing your experience with 'David'. In doing so I feel less anxious with the problem and will just deal with it until someone comes up with the answer. Mine get plenty of air circulation so I'm sure that isn't an issue. The beauty and fragrance out weighs the issue. It is the most beautiful pure white phlox I've ever seen and I will continue to pamper my specimen. :-)
