Will new canes grow through a couple inches of mulch?

I finally got my second rose cutting I rooted from last year in the ground just now. It had been sitting outside hardening off for quite awhile. The last few days I noticed it was putting up odd little shoots that looked like one blade of grass with a thicker, curved area, sticking up about an inch. Whatever they are, I'm afraid I may have ruined them by planting. The other rose, a different variety, didn't exhibit anything like that.

After I got it out of the pot, those "shoots" appeared to be coming from the roots, but I can't be sure as some stray seeds could have gotten in there, but they don't look like most 2-leaved seedlings normally do.

I did well to just get it in the ground, had to break sod and make a fairly wide circular spot, dug deep then backfilled to bring the soil level up and give the roots a good start, used the sod to fill bare spots on the terrace, scraped most of the dirt off it with a kitchen knife, half filled, watered, finished filling, watered again, formed a circle of dirt to direct water, then apply 2+ inches cypress mulch, then put a chicken wire cage (will come off in time) around it secured by 3 rebar stakes, The cutting is about 4 feet tall, didn't have the energy to amend the soil any, the soil broke up nicely for me, on the dry side, and the grass was healthy there.

How soon should I feed it?

Sure hope it makes it, only one of this kind rooted for me. No one seems to know what it is, some kind of rambler or maybe moss rose, smells heavenly, I think. I'm pretty sure it suckers judging from the site I took it from.

It's some kind of old European once bloomer. For ID you could post a profile closeup of a bud showing its base and sepals and some stem with thorns or bristles, a closeup of a whole leaf, and an open flower.

I would fertilize lightly after the roots have had time to settle in, two or three weeks, but others wait longer.

If the soil is good enough not to need amending, which it sounds like it is, there is no need to dig a big hole, IMO.

Shoots can grow through mulch, but those don't sound like rose shoots. Wait and see.

Thanks, michaelg, I doubt if it will bloom this spring. How could it with only one fairly thin cane?

They did a number on the rose I took the cuttings from, cut it way back, cleared some brush around it which is good, but I'll try to get some photos when it blooms, if it blooms there. They're suspicious of me so I have to be careful over there now. I have some pictures of the bush when it wasn't blooming stashed away from before, but I'll see if I can get a better shot of a bud and bloom, caught them pretty late when I took the photo I posted, I see I took it May 28, 2006.

So I'd better watch it pretty soon here. I'll drive by there and see what it is doing when I go out.

I don't know why I have to dig big holes. Once I get the sod off, the soil is pretty packed, and I like to loosen it up all around, plus I dig the hole as big in diameter as I plan to mulch. Plus I had potted it up in a gallon pot.

90 degrees and I just finished planting 2 Jeanne La Joie on the sides of my arbor, I wanted to get it done, and it is shady for awhile this time of day. I'm worried if it will get enough sun especially on one side of it near the apple tree. Can't just dig a hole, spaded a big area around it, pulled out all the grass and a couple weeds that had sprung up, put more topsoil on, didn't dig such a deep hole then though 'cuz they were in small pots, pint size or so. Now if I want to stick in some other plants around there, it will be easier.

The soil is pretty good because for years I never raked my leaves, then have been mulching them the last few years, and I get a ton of them, gave up when I had 30 big garbage bags full sitting in my back yard back when we could still use plastic lawn bags and wasn't near done. Never have to fertilize my lawn. Never water it either.

My experience is that the seedlings will just never show up if heavily mulched. If you dig around, you will find the seedling stem and no leaves or growing point. You can probably figure that slugs, snails or sowbugs did it. On the other hand, it's helpful to put a little something on the soil surface to shade it and keep it moist while the seeds are germinating. A little sand works, or a crop cover fabric.

Dana: What were the forces that impelled you to plant 10 different raspberry varieties at the same time? Are you planning to run variety trials? If you are a beginner, and it does sound that way, it would have been better to start with one or two carefully chosen varieties. Red and yellow raspberry varieties propagate and spread by underground rhizomes, while black raspberries reproduce and spread by tiprooting. If you planted 10 varieties, I hope you have a lot of space, since you will want to keep them planted well apart from each other, defined as roughly 6 feet. Otherwise, they will quickly grow together, and you will lose track of which variety is which, to your great regret. The yellow variety Fallgold is a particularly aggressive spreader, and after about 3 years in the ground is easily capable of spreading 6 feet or more from the original planting. Out of these 10 varieties, some will no doubt be successful for you, but others will be failures or the quality of the fruit may not meet your expectations. At that point, you will want to be able to completely remove the losers, and keep the winners, but you can't do that if they are all mixed up. TCStoehr is correct that the original canes on your plants are 2nd year canes, or floricanes, that will normally leaf out and may bloom and set a few berries. Meanwhile, the new canes for this season will emerge from underground. Many "everbearing" varieties, such as the Fallgold and Heritage that you named, are capable of growing up and producing on primocanes in late summer of the first season. The black variety Cumberland, however, will not bear on floricanes until next season, defined as 2010. Whether you remove the original canes from your plants or leave them is nearly irrelevant. It just won't make much difference. If your raspberry purchases also included some summerbearing varieties (i.e. Latham, Taylor), these will not bear the first season, but will also bear in 2010. You really should have done some prior investigation about raspberries before jumping into this 10-variety situation, since there are, as you can see, significant differences in the growth and production habits of the various varieties. To make the best of the situation now, about all you can do is to ensure that the varieties are carefully kept separate, so that when they grow up you are able to make the decisions on what stays and what goes. Woodstock, I don't grow Kiowa, but the AR thornless I grow have less winter dieback than TC. I've read before thorny erect are generally hardier than thornless erect, so my guess is Kiowa will probably do fine. But as I said, I've had pretty good luck with TC. I really don't think wind is the big factor because we get tons of it here. One thing that is perhaps different is that my planting is mulched very heavy. The mulch almost never lets the ground dry out. Fertility may play a role as well (i.e. high fertility produces larger canes, larger canes being more hardy than smaller ones). On the pruning, mature TC plants will send out too many laterals for the trellis. I generally remove some of the laterals leaving about 3 laterals per wire, keeping the bigges ones. The laterals will also grow too long and overlap laterals from the next plant, so you generally have to shorten the laterals as well. New plants don't have as much vigor and may require very little pruning. "As far as I know, older maps put me in 5, newer maps put me in 6, so what zone am I actually in?" The USDA redrew the zone maps several years ago. If the new ones say zone 6 then that's your zone. As you allude, the minimum temperature of a zone is the average minimum winter temperature. So if most of your winters are around 0F then it would be hard for your zone to average minus 20F for a zone 5. That said, it only takes one winter minus 20F to kill some fruit trees, so zone rankings have their limitations.

I don't think, for my part of the country, that it's a fable, more that's it's a necessity, especially with modern roses. Here, it takes two to three years for a rose cane to become a cane with protective bark. If those more vulnerable canes are scratched by anything, be it badly handled secateurs or abrasion by thorns or wood, then there's a scar with some dead cells. How does mulch work? You know that mulch breaks down by fungi,etc. that work on dead wood and some of those fungi are agressive. This is how rot enters into canes (canker is a symptom.) I have had major problems getting some HTs and Hybrid Perpetuals through winter because of cankers. A second, more OGR ish reason is to let the plants expand more easily. Mannerly suckering is desirable and if there's six inches of mulch where a new cane wants to grow OR if a sucker wants to come our three inches from the crown, then it's going to be contorted at the point where it emerges from the ground as it pushes through the wood, which can be very heavy and compacted after spring rains. Rainfall: 0.2" of rain will never reach the ground through four inches of mulch. Midseason fertilizer: won't reach the roots through a heavy mulch application. Those are my reasons. Maybe they don't fit your growing conditions?

There is no sign of any buds. It won't bloom this year. They cut it back too much or did something to it. He does landscaping on the side (mostly yard maintenance), and left a bunch of tree branches (smallish but a mess) right in the street. In that neighborhood, you can get away with it. So far anyway. Not in mine, and it's not that fancy either.

He had some beautiful double orange lilies, no sign of those either, but he kept the tiger lilies. The double ones might come back, might not. I can't imagine why he would do that, must have been easier to just clear about everything out of there.

The rose should be ok next year if he (or she) doesn't manage to ruin it.
