Advice on which tractor, x300, Regent or LA deere series?
Comments (22)Varmint, Thanks on all your feedback, and that of others. I took delivery today of my new tractor. I put it right to work pulling my dump cart full of brush, and my yard sweeper. Maybe I should change my handle to happinessisanewtractor. Observations: This tractor is very comforable. the ergonomics of the Regent are very good. The controls are well laid out and very intuitive. The 18HP Kohler Courage engine is plenty strong, and very reasonable in noise level. Especially compared to my old tractor's 8hp Briggs. The transmission is very smooth (smoother than the x300 I drove, probably how it's belt drive is designed), and pulled my sweeper like it was'nt even there. The ride accross my bumpy yard is just that, bumpy. I'm going to check the tire pressure again, and try lowering it to improve the ride a little. Also, the steering is very precise, but that also lends itself to jolting out of my hands on bumps if I'm not careful. Again tire pressure may help that. I suspect the same would be true on almost any "lawn tractor". Essentially it means I have to keep my speed down in the areas that are bumpy. My old tractor's seating position was closer to the ground, so I may be perceiving that I'm going slower on the new Regent than I actually am. Perhaps a heavier Garden Tractor, ie: a Conquest or x500 might traverse the lumpy terrain more smoothly, but I would not want to give up the manuverability of the Regent, which is fantastic. I have not mowed yet, but did engage the mower. Take note, this thing is powerful, it shot several pine cones like a rocket. The discharge is very strong, which I hope will reduce clumping of my grass clippings. Overall I feel that I made a good choice for my needs. I have to say that Simplicity orange is just as nice looking as Deere Green. I'm looking forward to mowing season & will let you know how it performs....See MoreJohn Deere X300 Mower Blades shut off on their own while mowing
Comments (3)The big pedal on the right side, not the forward or reverse pedals, is the parking brake. That parking brake pedal operates a safety interlock that prevents the PTO (electric clutch) from engaging the mower deck when set. More than likely there is an adjustment for the switch or the switch is failing. Sometimes a piece of debris, a twig or such, gets stuck up there. There is a possibility that the "new" clutch is defective or out of adjustment. Did you buy real JD parts or aftermarket? What was the original problem that necessitated the new clutch and switch and battery.? I*f you can't "common sense" it by looking you'll need the technical manual for your X300 (and it costs $$$) or get your X300 to the JD dealer....See MoreJohn Deere X300 Series Dilemna
Comments (13)I have the John Deere X320, bought in 2006. It has a 48" 3 blade deck, which I put the mulching kit on, including mulching blades. I live on a hillside, and have some steep hills. I've never had any problems at all, including when I pull around my 48" core aerator and trailor full of who knows what. I did put two of the suitcase weights on the back to help with traction on the hills. I also have many blue spruces to mow around, so I slapped a grill gaurd on the front, which actually does help, even though I wanted it for the cool look. The cut is good, but I follow a pattern, so it looks better. I keep the mowing height at 2.75", which is healthier for the lawn, but is also the lowest I can go before I get too close to scalping on the hill crests. The deck is easy enough to take off and put on, but leveling the deck is a pain, although not hard to do. As for leaving grass clumps with the mulch deck, well, it ONLY happens when I have let the lawn grow too long, and it is wet. In that case, I just drive over it a 2nd time and it goes away. All in all, I am VERY happy with my X320, and really enjoy mowing with it. Oh, and about the 4-wheel steer, I was told by the guy at the dealership to avoid it if you have steep hills, as you risk a rollover if you have to turn on a hill, which I do. Joe...See MoreJohn Deere X300 or GT235
Comments (10)I recently was faced with the same decision, and I chose a used GT235. Mine had about 130 hours on it and had the Briggs Vanguard motor. I have been very pleased with it. If I was only going to mow, and if I had a lot of obstacles, I'd probably get the X324 for the AWS. But for the versatility of doing things other than mowing, the GT235 was a smart buy I think. By the way, removing the deck on the GT235 is easy. I'm not sure on the X300 series. It may be even easier for all I know....See MoreUser
