John Deere X300 or GT235

I'm looking for a mower that is going to last a while. We have about 2 acres to mow. I can buy a 6 year-old GT235, which seems to be a good machine, or for a few hundred more, get a new X300. Any opinions or advise would be appreciated.

well if your just going to mow and maybe snow removal a x300 series would be fine. a X320 or X340 or X324. If you plan on any garden chores like tilling I would go with the GT. I prefer to have a more vesital machine than a lawn tractor so that is why I stay with a Garden tractor's over a lawn tractor.

I recently was faced with the same decision, and I chose a used GT235. Mine had about 130 hours on it and had the Briggs Vanguard motor. I have been very pleased with it.

If I was only going to mow, and if I had a lot of obstacles, I'd probably get the X324 for the AWS. But for the versatility of doing things other than mowing, the GT235 was a smart buy I think.

By the way, removing the deck on the GT235 is easy. I'm not sure on the X300 series. It may be even easier for all I know.

Sounds like the res bottle is cracked, or the hose is loose. It could be an input shaft seal, but that would leak all the time, or more when running. The fenders come off pretty easy on that tractor to check.

Jim, That B&S Vanguard is a commercial grade engine and should be treated with respect rather than lumped in with the multitude of flat heads and one-lungers under the hood of whatever... Here's a link to where you can view and download the operator's manual for your GT235... click here With the serial # from your GT235 you can choose exactly the correct manual. I'd follow the viscosity recommendations in the manual for peace of mind. Not knowing the service history of your new used GT I'd stick with a quality brand of dino oil and follow the prescribed maintenance JD recommends in the manual.

That is a really loaded question. 500$ for a parts mower is a lot. Engines are incredi-expensive if it would need one to be whole. Yet, if the deck was nice and you actually needed one- a good buy is born. Not many people will shell out that money for a mower that doesn't run or has potential issues. Remember that as you flash 2 Ben Franklins in front of him after you pulled up w/ your trailer!

Wow, what a great bonus with that house! I have a the next smaller tractor with the next smaller blade--GT225 with a 42" blade. My tractor is identical save for the smaller engine and mower deck; the blade is the same but 2" shorter. The blade slips into the same mount that holds the front deck hangar, and is held from falling forward by the braces (arms), which slip over two lugs in the middle of the frame. These lugs are not related to the deck lift system, but they are the same ones which support the tiller frame if you ever get one of those (highly recommended). As far as the lift goes, if you have a hand lift, there's just a threaded rod which clamps to the deck lift handle. Unfortunately, the design does not allow any down pressure (in the interest of protecting the handle). It's a bit primative, but it works. The blade does NOT use the D-shaped holes. To hook it up, just lay the blade out on your lawn with the braces laid back, pull your deck-less tractor up to it, and slip the blade into the open slot. Go underneath and attach the braces to the lugs with spring clips. Then attach the lift mechanism to the deck lift arm. I never bother to adjust the assist spring, but you might want to add more tension. Set the skid shoes (runners) for the desired height, and set the angle pin for left, right or straight plowing. If the process seems complicated, you're doing it wrong. The blade is good for a lot more than moving snow. It's also very effective for re-grading loose soil after tilling, or spreading gravel. You probably already know this, but the equipment you got with the house cost over $8k new. Congrats.

No snow removal in Texas. Mainly mowing and pulling a small manure spreader (about 4' by 4') Thanks for the info.

I have a local person selling a x300 w/ 50 hours on it and a trailer all bought within a year (moving out of town)

Price asking $2200. To mee it sounds like a good deal and prob. get down to 1900. worth it to buy real quick?

That sounds like a steal for the x300 (and trailer!!), assuming it's in good shape. It should still be under warranty. Act quickly because it won't last long at that price.

I have a GT245 and really like. This is a garden tractor frame, vs the x300 lawn tractor series. GT is heavier, has bigger tires, goes faster, bigger tranny.

The X300 series and the X500 series tractors share the same frame(AM136392) except for the rear hitch plate and diffrent front braket depending on which X500 series but the transmission of coarse do differ. But I would still go with the GT for your planned use.

I have a GT225 and love it. The 235 is a nice upgrade because you get the 2cyl engine and bigger deck. No question I'd go with the GT series, just because you'll be able to haul a ton of sh!t in that manure spreader and not have to worrry about damaging the transmission. The X300 isn't really made to drag around heavy things.
