Composting with Coffee Grounds sold on the Internet

I found a website in which they are selling Coffee grounds that area already "finished" and made into compost. I would be interested but the price seems high and I can't find the list of the other ingredients. Part of the joy of composting, is making your own, but if you don't want room for a bin or are pressed for time, this would be a great idea. But, I am sure the postage would be expensive to get the grounds. I would like to see more products like this available in local garden centers. So, I could pick up a bag and try it. This is not an endorsement, because I have never tired Java Soil.

Seems like you would be expending a lot of fuel and resources to buy something you could scronge for free closer to home.

I'm not sure what the compost version fo "food miles" is, but this product seems to fly in the face of environmentalism.

Sheesh. The stuff is 15# for $10. And I suspect the would add shipping. Hmm; I wonder what the rate is to CA from Atlanta.

As was said, this product seems to fly in the face of environmentalism. Better to scrounge your own.

Used coffee grounds are my favorite 'green'. Fresh cut grass is my other favorite green, but it is not available year-round as the grounds are. Starbucks can provide a 100 pounds a week, if you collect them properly. That means you get on good enough terms with the employees to have them understand you will be glad to take ALL the grounds they can provide. Otherwise they will give you one bag a visit. I have not been in the store in three years. My hatchback contains a couple of Rubbermaids and a long-forked tool to grasp the knot in the grounds bag. It takes practice to get the bag out without ripping it open, even with two bags used. The bag is lifted out of the dumpster into the Rubbermaid container. If any grounds or trash are spilled on the ground, they are cleaned up with a brush and tray. Starbucks does not directly encourage gardeners to collect out of the dumpster, and one has the responsibility to leave the dumpster as one finds it. On one visit to the store, no grounds were available and I asked if I could look in the dumpster. Five bags were in it, and on future visits I never went back in the store for fear that some legal-minded employee would tell me differently. Interestingly, the grounds in the dumpster are more to my liking than the bags the employees give you. The higher moisture content means they do not clump up the way the espresso grounds do. On the other hand, the bags of loose grounds and filters found in the dumpster also have trash in them. The average person who goes into Starbucks and is given a bag of grounds (some of the new fancy silver bags only hold about seven pounds of used grounds) probably is not aware that Starbucks trashes 70-90% of used grounds (my estimate) Seven-bin Bob

Yes it will, especially if you have poor soil. In essence, if you feed the soil, you feed the plant even if it's just a blade of grass. UCGs are the only things I have used in the last couple of years on our lawn. We had poor soil - no organic matter in it. DH dug 14 holes on the property first year we were here to get worms to go fishing. Not a worm in sight. Now he just has to go and gently jiggle the base of a perennial in the gardens (yes I also fling it in there) and the worms come pouring out. No kidding. I'm sure others on this forum have seen this picture before, but I'll post it again to show you what our lawn looks like when our neighbours' lawns are brown in the heat of the summer. Just fling the stuff. If you get little piles, take a rake and spread it out. I do it when it's about to rain.

strawberry hill, your post is so interesting. I've never tested my soil but knowing that it's basically decomposed granite (in some places solid granite just 1 1/2 feet down) is a good clue. Growing the right roses for your area, as has been emphasized on this forum over and over, is in my opinion the most important lesson to learn. Having once chosen the right ones, there are still steps that can be taken, as you point out, to fine-tune the results. A lot depends on how much you can or are willing to do. I've found that coffee grounds from my husband's coffee consumption, alfalfa meal and adequate water are the simplest way for me to have good-looking roses. Judicious pruning also has its place. Poisons never will; I'd give up roses first. It's part art, part science and part the will of the roses to live and thrive. It's a little different for everyone, and it is endlessly fascinating. Lakshmi, Coffee grounds can add to the quality of your soil as most compost and peat materials do. It's something we use everyday and so instead of throwing these grounds away, it can be recycled for use in the garden. I like the idea of reusing kitchen refuse and this is in line of that idea. Speaking of which I encourage people to try their hands in making their own compost or for those who enjoy a challenge, try their hands at doing vermiculture. A local coffeehouse does this. I got a bag for Xmas and it seemed like good stuff, but I wouldn't buy it. I would rather make my own from what SB gives me.

Starbucks should actually make the coffee grounds into compost and sell it. This way they could make a profit. Whole Foods had that idea. They sold compost made of discarded fruits. But, in fact what they sold was not real compost made of the discarded fruits. It was like big pieces of cheap wood in with some kind of junk like saw dust. It is a good idea to make and sell compost on a big scale, but no one seems to be able to do it right. The price has to be reasonable or no one would buy it, and it has be something you can pick up locally. It's too heavy to ship. East Bay Nursery used to have a good bagged compost, but they stopped carrying it. What they had instead was just wood ground up. It's easy to buy a bunch of wood, but impossible to find real compost for sale.

Didn't even say what composting standards it met.

But it points out a hole in supply. A non-composter cannot easily buy a small amount of 'good' compost. A lot of the bagged compost is not that good.

I should not have posted that link, because now when I go back there it has flashing ads on the bottom of the page. The whole thing could be a scam to get people to click on the page to get money by selling the ads and not even the compost at all. It says locally, but does not say where locally. It can't be everywhere at once.

Hello everyone,

We just started this company a few months ago with the goal of collecting compost and coffee grounds from local sources here in downtown/midtown Atlanta. We then sell it locally here in Atlanta. We want to help reduce landfill waste while promoting all natural gardening locally. We developed our website and posted it to get our information and name out on the web, but we do not intend to sell via the internet or ship our product at all at this point. Also, we are currently on a 'start-up' budget, so we are trying to save costs where we can. We selected a free hosting site to post our company's website and now after some time they have decided to post a banner at the bottom of the page.
