Roses That Can Stand The Heat From Rogue Valley Roses
Comments (23)Hi Strawberryhill: I wonder where Khalid is??? It seems slightly cooler than here but close. I attempted Abbaye de Cluny about 8 years ago; she always looked ivory, and then burned horribly in late May. Instead I grew Brandy and Just Joey, which did not have the attributes of ADC, but they held color and did not burn. I usually look to the Phoenix gardeners to see if something can take the heat because I have found that 105 degrees is very different than 115, or 121, and AZ is one place I have found that deals with extreme heat and even more persistent high temperatures that relentlessly delve near or into the 120's. July and August are our brutal months. It hit 122 in the city yesterday and it is still June. It is often in the 100's beyond midnight, was already 95 at 7 a.m. Wednesday, but all of this is coupled with drought conditions. The one hundred teens to 120's are the norm for 2+ months straight; it is dreadful. It would be great to discover other specific places that also deal with the heat and drought as we do because their plant selections could be more suitable for my area. This is an odd place to garden. Unlike Phoenix, it gets too cold to grow cactus without winter protection. Las Vegas could be a top contender for the "where not to live" places if you are an avid gardener and want to grow a wide range of annuals, perennials, roses and other plants in a garden. I read the thread, and saw the lovely photos and am eyeing Excellenz von Schubert... again... that is if we move. The Marie Pave took my breath away. There is also an abundance of information that I really need to siphon through and decipher in terms of my situation; especially related to the horse manure and termites. We do not have big termite issues here; unlike California, a termite inspection with a home purchase was standard protocol, but we could be moving my newly purchased and potted roses to the PNW, and that changes things. I really appreciate your advice because it is fundamental and I believe wise as the focus should also be the biological environment inclusive of soil and its components. I have a hunch that your input and advice may prove to be invaluable for me. This post was edited by desertgarden561 on Sun, Jun 30, 13 at 16:18...See MoreNew Paul Barden Roses at Rogue Valley Roses
Comments (24)I am sitting here, trying to decipher YMMV?!?! Anyway, I might give it a try anyway. BS is a major problem in my garden. I don't spray w/big chem, but have had good results with finely ground cornmeal. Especially if I'm diligent. Dakota Redwing is such an appealing rose; I feel like I have to give it a try. Thanks for your honest input and I look forward to hearing about more of your work! Golden Buddha is the only rose in my garden that I want more than one of the plant. Wonderful, happy rose which delights me @ time I see it....See MoreRogue Valley Roses looks like they have a bunch of roses back in stock
Comments (68)Pulease...you guys. I am laughing so hard. I can think of so many forum members who make much better bouquets than I ever could. The thing about RR and Ascot is you just need a lot of blooms to stuff in a vase--the blooms do it all for you--plonks for the lazy. I just looked up Jude a while ago to see his parentage, if possible. No, it can't be...Abe Darby is a parent. My little runt Abe which grows next to my 8+ft tall Jude. Something is wrong here. Comments (30)Thank you for the welcome rockyrose. I've enjoy reading the forum. And, Sheila, I've noticed that you try to bring in perspective on RVR. I have worked for small businesses before, and I understand that it's not personal or malicious/rude. I don't take it personally. However, on the consumer side, the desire for the correct item for the money spent is also a concern of mine. From what I can tell, it's not always a miss...people have gotten correct roses from RVR as well, and incorrect roses occur with every nursery. (The small business I worked for was for an older gentleman as his "retirement" job with collectible stamps -- another area that is rife with potential missing/incorrect stamp identification). What matters is how the company handles such situations -- and only time will tell for my personal experience :) *edit: So I want to apologize for the off-topic posts on this thread to @rockyrose And to also say that I ordered from RVR despite knowing some issues with sending incorrect roses because I wanted to give them/take a chance on them because I know that personal experience varies, people tend to post negative experiences more than positive, and that @Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR has mentioned that there are new workers (i.e. hot Scott, haha :) there recently which hopefully means a different experience. I'll post on a new thread if I have a positive experience with them, but since I requested an October ship date (due to the heat wave/summer heat in general) it may be some time (2022) before I can really tell. And on an aside, I think it's @Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR's full bush shots of Dakota Redwing I've seen on Houzz that has convinced me to want this rose bad enough to take a chance :)...See MoreMaryl (Okla.
