Honda HHT31 trimmer choke and loss power whan gas!!

I bought a new Honda HHT31S less than a years ago, and I only have about 20 hours on it and I change oil and maintain it. Recently it start to loss power and want to die when I gas it. Usually it was well warm up before it happened. I was trimming along and it started after about 10 minutes. Symptoms are:

1) Choke and loss power when I pull the trigger.

2) Moment I release the trigger, it idle very smooth. I check the choke was in open/run position.

3) I loosen the gas cap to make sure no back pressure.

4) I check spark plug and it looked normal, like how it look all along. I have only 20 hours on the trimmer.

5) I fill up the gas tank to make sure it get gas, and I check the gas filter was at the bottom, no chance of not getting gas.

6) I wash the air filter ones and put oil on it(wet type). I check and it is a little oilly. I don't think it would matter and besides it ran good for a while before happen.

7) I ALWAYS put clean gas. I make sure no dirt got in.

I did not change the gas filter cause I don't have one in hand. But it's only 20 hours and I always have clean gas. Gas is always within one month, 91 octane and I put Stabil all the time.

What could be the problem? I think I cover all bases except a new gas filter. Could it be the carb??? I don't think is ignition because when I release the trigger, it idle very smooth. It is still under warrante, but I would like to take a stab at it first.

do not fool with the unit or it will void the warranty

I'm not sure what kind of air filter it is but it does sound like an air/fuel mixture problem.

Simple way to check if it is not getting enough air is to try throttling it without the air filter on. Of course only do that in a "clean" environment to avoid sucking things into the engine.

If not that, maybe a carb adjustment, but that does not seem the likely culprit.

After that it would be beyond me, but maybe some sort of crankcase leak.

There are others much better than me at diagnosing engine problems. Probably the 14 year old kid around the corner or his little sister, lol.

So what is your recommendation on that Honda trimmer?

Hi to Zeke & all, Quite a surprise to get a reply after all this time but very welcome too, Thanks! I've been missing the forum too but taking care of my Mother after she had a large stroke takes a lot of time but fortunately things are smoothing out now! Back to the Question: My Yard Man mower has meet all my expectations and more! It's a joy to use, has plenty of power, fairly quiet running which I really appreciate as I don't use ear plugs or such either - no need to, along with the fact it's very smooth operaterating and stable. It's true the deck does have some flex to it but on uneven ground such as I have that works to the mowers advantage for better traction! The front wheel drive works very well too and pulls strong and the engine starts very easily even with just a slight pull. As mentioned prior the only thing that happened was that one front hub cap fell off luckly while pushing it without mowing, that was easily resolved with one wrap of masking tape, which I did to both caps to make the griping surface a slight bit bigger in diameter and they're holding on just fine. I've used the mower in all three configurations Mulch,SD & RB and again very pleased with its ability. The other day I had the catcher bag completely full and it was still pulling great! The high rear wheels really come in handy as it's easy to rock it back for turning 180 or rolling it through loose gravel as I have in some areas in the back yard. So for my money I feel I made a very good purchase and couldn't be more pleased!! To me, comparing it to my old mower, it's like having a wide-track jeep to mow with as it makes short work of the mowing task while being a lot of fun to use! HTH

I ran into a similar problem with my brand new (2 week old) Honda HHT35S string trimmer. Basically it worked great for the first two hours of use. But then it developed a problem where it would sputter a little and would not run. I figured I had just run out of gas, but when I filled up the tank and tried to restart it, it was difficult to start and when I was able to get it started, it had a rough idle and would only run a few seconds. I thought I was going to have to return the unit or take it into a service repair shop which I was not thrilled about considering I just purchased this unit new. So I thought why not take a brief look into what's wrong before I load it up and take it back. Since it would attempt to start but then die out quickly, I realized that it had to be either a fuel or air intake issue. I do use 92 octane mixed with Sta‑Bil (fuel stabilizer). I was using brand new gasoline so I knew it was not a stale gas issue. I started inspecting the trimmer by removing the flip down breather/air cleaner cover and checked the air filter to make sure it was not clogged up in any way. Nope it looked brand spanking new ... as it should. Next I started pressing the fuel primer bulb to make sure gas was getting into the carb. I noticed that after depressing the bulb, it would slowly expand back to it original position. Then it stopped expanding completely and just remained depressed. Ah-ha! A fuel-air lock! That would certainly explain the symptoms. I then proceeded to inspect the fuel supply and return lines. It turned out that the black fuel line had a kink in it. Thus it was restricting fuel flow and eventually blocked it all together. For now I have just repositioned the line to get the kink out, but it looks like the rubber hose may be a bit too long and the excess length may be contributing to the kink. So if this problem returns, then I may cut this hose a little shorter so that it has a more natural and gradual bend and does not kink. Ehh I.M.O both Stihl and Shindaiwa are neck & neck "hybrid-4 is just a fancy name like 4-mix is for Stihl" they both work exactly the same. Ohh yeah and a correction I have Br600 blowers not 500 it just says magnum on the cover I thot they were 500's this whole time.. Since we've been looking at some interesting engines lately that take the road less traveled, a comment by rafe03 on this story about this hybrid engine that needs no oil in the crankcase and no oil pump either, but it operates as a 4 stroke. The fuel mix lubricates the engine like a 2 stroke. The fuel mix is drawn in through the crankcase and, by a very roundabout way, makes its way to the intake port, lubricating everything along the way. There's an animation on the Stihl site. "Cue Link" (http://www.stihl.ca/4mix/english/stihl4mix/mixprinzip.htm) And now you have whats called a 4-mix engine. Which is just basically a hybrid 2-stroke engine posing as a 4-stroke and with the power 2 back it up. Life used to be so simple, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, diesel. Now we have 2 and 4 stroke hybrids, 6 strokes, external combustion engines ..., and turbines and electrics and hybrids.

Beware of Stihl FS55 ignition coil. I had problem after 5yrs and 5mos of trimmer not starting. I diagnosed myself that the coil was bad. My unit was out of warranty acording to Stihl. There is no freebe even if you do the work yourelf. 5 years and that is it for free coil. No problem, I've got a few coils from other small engines I have salvaged. Had one that fit perfectly. Engine would start but would not rev past idle. Found out from the Coil manufacturers web site [Walbro] that the model coil that Stihl uses has an electronic circuit in the coil that automatically ADVANCES the spark timing when magnets in flywheel pass the coil.As a matter of fact their coil is call a Magnito. Most older ignition coils even if they fit don't work that way, hence the high price of Stihl coils [magnito] from about $35 to as much as over $100 depending on the motor and model. The cheapest coil I found that was NEW for FS55 was $33.50. The old style coils cost any where from $10 to $20 and lasted 3 times as long. I see certain sites selling used replacement parts. This very delicate coil is one thing I would not take a chance on buying Used unless you could get it dirt cheap. The idea behind this Coil design is that the engine starts quicker and you don't need as much warm up time. Unless you're weed trimming for a Living, the 2 minutes you may save from Start up to Warm up is no big deal. Real cheap weed trimmers that may not start quickly and take longer to warm up is not a result of old style coil design, it's more the result of a very cheap inefficient CARBURATOR design.

Hi,

I have a Honda HHT31S trimmer. 3 Years now and very reliable. My guess, and it is only a guess is that maybe one of the throttle setting screws on the carb cable has got a little loose. Check page 28 of the manual. Try tweeking that. Maybe when you gas it, you are pushing the air valve a little too far. Hence too much air, not enough fuel hence works great at idle and not so great when you pull that throttle cable.

As a quick check, try pulling the throttle halfway OK there? then like 90% of the way, OK there? If it is, seems like a minor tweak to the throttle cable adjustment nut might do the trick.

The other issue, less likely is OLD petrol. I always use a fuel stabilizer addative like STABIL, available at Home Depot. Red in color, looks like cough medicine. It could be that if you have not use your trimmer in a while, the fuel gummed up some of the carberuttor jets.

Thanks guys for the help.

I posed in another site also. This and together with the feedback from the other site confirm my suspicion, the problem is most likely in the carb. It is under warrante, I just took it to the dealer already.

Did you ever figure out the problem? I have an HHT31s that is doing the exact same thing...I've been working on it and found nothing obvious. Thanks in advance..Jason
