My visit to Rosalia 2010--mendocino_rose's garden

I was fortunate to be able to attend "Rosalia", Pamela (mendocino_rose) and Michael Temple's annual celebration of their rose garden. While there I saw Anita (Cemetery_Rose) and Gregg Lowery from Vintage Gardens.

Pam and Michael have a 40 acre homestead northwest of Ukiah, CA that has been filling up with roses over the years. It's a breathtaking location on the slopes of a mountain with views for miles. It's such an amazing place that words can't adequately describe it so this year (my second year there) I brought my camera. Lots of pictures so I'll only show one here and below is a link to the photo album.

Diane, what great shots of the party and the roses! I miss that garden more than I can say. Glad to hear it was fun and obviously the most beautiful place on earth that day.

Just got an email from Vintage Gardens canceling this Saturday's Open Garden. They are also cancelling the one on May 30th. There wasn't one planned for Sunday the 2nd so I'm afraid you are out of luck. If you want to come back to the cemetery on Sat, many things are blooming that weren't when you were here last. We also might get a chance to talk! There's to be a tour on symbology, which should be fun - it is at 10 am. You would also be welcome to come by my garden in the afternoon. Glad you've had a good tour overall. Empire mine is usually pretty late, in my experience - I've never yet hit the Fortune's Double Yellow in full bloom. Oh, you all make me laugh! First, Carol did survive the trip. She was a little grungy from riding in the spare tire storage area beneath the Explorer, but hey, she's a martyr to roses just like me. I'd have ridden there myself but I had to drive, you understand. Marleah, I can't believe we missed you by a matter of a few hours - it would have been terrific to see you at UR. Paul and Kevin were so nice to us, taking us on a tour and sharing their roses. Lucky you to live so close! Ron, it was wonderful to see you again. I can't believe the transformation at Garden Valley. You've done wonders. When Gregg took us on the tour before everyone arrived, we were all thrilled to see the shade bed filled with hydrangeas from Vintage. Thank you for helping me to pick out a couple to bring home. My neighbor, Jake, is thrilled with his gift. The Fragrance Garden is vastly improved by the elimination of the wisteria pergola and changing the beds. I'm so impressed. But you know, the truth is that I'd have to live down there to see you all and the gardens as often as I'd wish! I was glad that it rained so that we had the opportunity to visit the second floor of the barn area (it's not a barn, though, but a train station? I can't remember). I was delighted to learn that you play piano and want to hear you tinkle the ivories one of these days. And you gave me an unforgettable memory - following you from Paula's to see Mel at SJHRG. I always knew it was your car because of that huge sunhat you wore! LA, you stinker! You gave me away! How will I explain even MORE roses to Marji?! I think the truth is that she's given up and just enjoys them, cuz I haven't been able to get her out of the garden in her spare time. If we're able to come down for Rosalia, she'll be with me. You're a sweetheart to foster my babies in the meantime. Pam, hold that spot you promised - I think help is on the way for your celebration. Can't wait to see you again. Carla, as soon as I have blooms, I'll post Sunny South. Anne, definitely start a savings account. We'll both look forward to it all year. And Lance, I wish you'd been able to join us. Vintage Gardens - no open garden this year

I would just wish that Vintage Gardens would have the financial resources and manpower "to do it all". I think, that being able to visit a rose garden is always a very special treat for any rose lover and I feel, it is a little bit sad that they can not open their garden this year. Organic garden dreams I just wanted to say about the statues: We've spent years aquiring them. We are avid bargain hunters. Sometimes statuary places have a "bone yard" of stuff that has been damaged. Occassionally there will be something there for a great price that has a few cracks that don't bother us or a blemish that can be hidden or fixed. These places do have sales. Sometimes they're very happy to sell something in the winter for a cheaper price if you ask(my husband always asks) Our most important statue, Flora was rather exspensive but not terribly so. I waited for her as we saved the money and then also we found that if you order something and not take it off the lot they discount 20%.

What a superlative setting for those beautiful roses. I loved the lion head fountain too. The cake, by the way, looks gorgeous and delicious and is beautifully decorated for the occasion. For me the true meaning of luxury is the modern world is a place like Pam's, the beauty of nature all around you and blessed peace and privacy.

The cake was a German chocolate and was as delicious as it looked. Even though it's a 3+ hour drive, the trip was well worth the effort.

As Sue said, it was indeed the most beautiful place in my world and many other people's worlds that day.

Thanks so much for sharing your photo album! I will probably never get to see Pam's beautiful garden in person, so I appreciate being able to see photos. What gorgeous blooms and breathtaking scenery. I bet the entire day was like a dream come true. It's very nice of them to open their place up to other rose lovers.

Diane, Thank you for taking and posting these photos. I'm always way too busy and distracted to think of taking photos. You can see it was way far from full bloom this year. The good news though is that it will be perfection for my daughter's wedding June 5th.
About the cake: it has now become famous among our friends. Dear David makes it every year. It is actually ground hazel nut flour with sourcream/chocolate frosting.

I see that you were enchanted by the garden as many of us are and a devotee of David's beautiful cakes. I was sorry to have missed it this year also.

So glad to see that you had a great time. Our Mendocino Rose is really Tinker Bell spreading fairy dust and creating beauty where ever she flies.
