Great! That sounds like a plan then. The only other idea I had was to place them on the outside of the blocks - but that would have been an eye sore - having 40+ pieces of rebar sticking out of the ground in front of the blocks. Lazygardens - no worries on the rebar sticking out of the ground. I intend to actually take the first layer of blocks off and pound the rebar down until about six inches is left. Then when the layer of blocks are re-added, the rebar will actually be about 2 inches below that piece. I do have some rebar sticking up every five feet (as seen in the picture). This is going to be used as my fence posts for my plastic fencing to keep the deer out. It is four feet out of the ground that I don't see a problem with falling on it :)

Also it is probably in the rainshadow of the roof. You will hate yourself in a few years if you don't move it now while it is still easy. IMO, a minimum rose planting distance from the house is 24", and 30" is much better, further out yet for a really big plant. I used to say 18" and 24" but experience has been showing me that those distances not really quite enough. You really do not want the mature shrub to actually touch the house. That makes a pathway for termites as well as keeping dampness in. BTW, I love the nice brick-and-stone setting. Rosefolly

Karen, I've been using these teepees a lot. I often find that, when a rose I've planted in a cluster is spreading too widely and invading other roses's space, I drive the 10ft rebars into the ground and secure them at the top; then tie the "wild" rose to the structure. My point is that, instead of re-locating a "spreading" rose, I just train it vertically. I do think it makes sense, however, to be able to have some room to maneuver around them, but this isn't always possible in my collection. When a rose on rebar seems to be sending out canes that are wider then the alloted space (i.e., beyond the rebar dimensions I had intended for it, I just pull the canes to the rebar and secure it to the structure with twine...or I cut the canes to fit.) I am finding that some of the roses grow much taller than the teepee (perhaps 6 feet taller, then, the canes start arching back down...it's a lovely sight for me). Some of my rebar teepees are as close as 2-3 ft from each other (Golden Celebration and Jude the Obscure come to mind...as well as MIP and Constance Spry). I would like to say that it IS wiser to set the rebar a little wider at the bottom. I've set a couple of them at only about an 18" diameter, and when the rose gets top heavy the structure can get wobbly. When a description of a rose says it's gonna need to be spaced 5 ft apart, this is not always reliable information. It really is gonna depend on your climate. An excellent example is the David Austin roses. Most descriptions of the David Austin roses suggest that they will stay 3-4 ft x 3-4 ft.... This is probably for a climate in England. For me 3-4 ft might really end up being 10-12 ft.... no exaggeration. So, when I space roses, it's always a "wait and see what's goon a happen" thing. In your situation, I'd space the individual teepees as far apart as I could to fill the space. If the roses don't exceed their space, plant other roses in between the teepees.. And, I ALWAYS put a clematis with the roses on the teepees... I hope this helps some. Robert

First off I want to thank you all for your time in helping us deal with this situation. Thankfully we are in a position where we can afford to pay both mortgages. We have considered staging but aren't really sure it will make a difference at this stage of the game and with the market being what it is. I will try and look in to it and see how much we would be talking to do this. Unfortunately for me it sounds like the consensus is that we are simply in a bad market and will just have to ride it out. We have considered renting but are unsure of the best way to market it. We might go ahead and put up a picture at work and see if anyone is interested. We do live about 1/2 an hour from where either of us work. That makes it somewhat less attractive for those that work where we do. Any ideas on the best way to market a property for lease/rent? Classified ads in the paper are quite expensive so I don't think we could do that for that for too long. I think we will consider making the color scheme a little more neutral and take down our art and things to at least eliminate that from the possible negatives. We would really love to have something on the walls of our new house anyways!! I am sorry to hear about so many people in a similar position. I can only hope that the market turns around soon.
