i would not bother staking it.. cut off the broken part.. and KEEP IT PROPERLY WATERED FOR THE REST OF SUMMER ... its a tree.. it will put out a new leader.. if you give it enough time.. keep it alive.. and dont kill it with too much love ... i have done it dozens of times... dont worry about it ... the tree isnt bug enough.. nor the trunk thick enough.. to take the weight of the stake.. and the bindings.. let it do its own thing ... and dont fertilize it trust me ...ken

My Rising Sun when planted in July'13 is below. Was 2.5' tall. Photo from Sep'16 below. About 5' tall. It was heavily mauled by deer down to one little branch in '14. Still a bit lopsided. In addition, I moved it once and it thrived through two legit Z5 winters, so this guy has shown nice toughness/vigor. Would probably be 7' without the deer damage. I don't have a photo that does it justice, but the color is impressive throughout most of the summer - lots of repeat flushes. I remember now looking at the Ruby Falls when shopping for a small weeper two years ago, but I got nervous about the Forest Pansy parentage, as Forest Pansy is not truly Z5 hardy. They sell FP here, but I don't think they thrive with the cold. That's why I went with the Pink Heartbreaker - similar form but green leaved.

Stake as high as you want for desired height. Random branching typical for ornamental crabs, these are basically flowering (and fruiting) bouquets that can be hard to redirect into shapes that conform to preconceived notions of what a proper tree looks like, are more visually effective when in color if dense in habit. And, yes, a lot of top pruning of a new specimen will reduce root growth and overall size increase. However if a young tree has crossing future main branches or other things about it that appear to demand attention when it is young and small is the time to do something about these. That said weeping trees are often more interesting cascading to the ground from a high top than pruned and trained to look like patio umbrellas, as is far too often done. Even if - as you presumably don't intend to do - this one is not going to have the weeping branches cut way back all the time, in an apparent attempt to make it as though non-weeping it will still be more graceful and attractive if the feathered branching it came with is retained (and the crown is trained to grow taller) instead of changing it so all of the branches originate from points near one another on the main stem. Otherwise probably the main part of its structure to address when it goes in is the circling roots it will have from being in that small pot.
