Need your help! Progress report &Fertilize/feeding babies?

HI everyone. I don't come here too often. Those of you who have been around for a while might remember me. I posted 2 years ago asking for help on yellow roses to plant in rememberance of my Black Lab "Friend". You'll be happy to know that those yellow roses ( I ended up with carefree sunshine, easy going( i think) and Golden Celebration- a david austin which has proven to be my favorite so far.. ( though it hasnt gotten too busy yet? kind of leggy with big blooms at the ends which tend to droop? any help there?

So thank you all for your help.. my doggy's memorial site is thriving for 2 years straight now. this will be it's third summer and it's honestly the pride of my garden and has gotten me more into roses than ever. so thank you so much for your help.

anyway- my main question for today was about some new roses I jsut purchased as a privacy hedge.. they are called "Pink Flamingo" roses..?Hedge roses.. I got a great deal through Cottage Farms direct. 6 babies for $38 and they came in really nice condition. SMALL- about 4-6 inches each but very green and healthy looking. anyway- i planted them up and mulched them in their new homes, and wrapped some fencing around them because a chippy or grundhog has taken a few bites of stem so far..but other wise they seem fine.

I need these guys to grow up big and strong.. so when do I fertilize? since they are babies..i wasn't sure the rules of when..I dont want to make them grow too fast to be strong rooted? or have the new growth ravaged by bugs?

I have no idea what i'm really talking about.. just trying to be careful. I wrote into the company about it..but nothign back yet..( only been a day). Thought you guys would know best anyway though..

what do you guys say? what's my best course of action?

First off congrats on the new babies. I would get a soil test done since this is a new bed and new roses. That way you Know what you need or do not need so won't overload on something. Contact your local extension office to see what there procedure is and if they charge. Some do some do not and charge is not that bad I pay $7 for a test done. After you get your results back you will know what you lack and then can plan. Till then its all guess work and you can do more harm than good. Good luck

Leave them be until after they bloom, all they need now is water. Once they bloom, you can start giving them a light dose of fish emulsion (half-strength) or other water-soluble (quarter-strength) every other week until mid-August. That's it for this year. Next year, you can apply an organic or organic-based fertilizer like Espoma Rose-tone (or Holly-tone) once a month, April - August. That should be good enough.

I know nothing about this variety, so I don't know if it is disease resistant. I suspect not, but hopefully someone else who ishas grown it can let you know.

dlenart blend ... I think it was copyrighted as the Whyte blend. We must have ordered the same day because out tags are identical except for the lot #'s off by one !!! My seed went down 8/21. Here are pics at 11 days. I have only been watering twice a day, 5 AM and in the afternoon. (Watering restrictions limit me to using my homemade inground system at night and hose end during the day). Temps here in NW Pennsylvania have been great (75 - low 80's), and I had some rain each of the first 5 days. Here is a quick rundown of my process. I killed grass, dethatched and removed waste, core areaed, added P and K based on PSU soil test, used Scott's starter fert. and topdressed with leaf compost from township. I was very nervous around day 7-8 with little action, so nervous that the DSU was actually comforting ME. Thanks to all of your advice I hope I am on my way to a beautiful lawn.

What is the level of organic matter in your soil? Did the lab not make any recommendation to fix that low soil pH? How much Nitrogen appears in any soil sample depends on the temperture of the soil when that soil is sampled and that determines the activity of the Soil Food Web which is what determines the level of available N which is what is tested. So testing for N when the SFW is not very active is not a good indication of what the available N will be when the soil is much warmer. Phosphorus, the P in fertilizer labeling, is needed by plants for proper growth and a deficiency can be seen if the plants develop purpleish streaks, slow growth, failing to set seeds, just a general lack of vigor. There is some evidence that a low soil pH (yours should be in the 6.2 to 6.8 range) can prevent a plant from using many essential nutrients including P. Appropriate levels of organic matter in the soil are also needed since that is what the Soil Food Web feeds on and they feed your plants what they need when they need those nutrients.

A...this thread is nearly 10 years old. I stopped growing 'New Hybrids' 5 years ago, primarily because it self-sowed with such abandon. That said, it volunteered only in garden beds and containers. I saw and have seen no evidence of it 'escaping' cultivation. That would tell me its cross-pollination didn't lead to reversion to species. There still appears to be little, if any evidence of invasive growth of Miscanthus sinensis cultivar reversions. The preponderance of evidence is the invasive stands of M.s. is species, and stem from ornamental plantings of the species over 100 years ago. I get volunteer M.s. every year, in small quantities in my gardens. The most prolific appears to be from 3 copies of 'Gracillimus' which are well isolated from my other varieties, but are in my front yard, and susceptible to cross pollination from the approximately 25 different varieties of M.s. being grown by my neighbors. Not a single one of these volunteers has been a reversion, but bore extremely close resemblance to 'Gracillimus.' A few have exhibited much finer foliage, and I've kept these in nursery beds in the back yard to keep an eye on them. They, like ~80% of my ornamental grasses, get dead-headed every fall.

Dug out some more "progress" pics. The angle is not exactly same, but the purple astible is the same reference point in all The first is in 2004, 2nd year for this area. Here is the same area in 2006 And now in 2008. This area gets full sun from early morning until early afternoon. Some do better than others. I took the hanging plants down to open the shot. The cattle panel was supposed to be trellis for sweat peas that were going to shade the hostas and scent the backyard before the lilies started blooming. I found out I don't know how to grow sweat peas!!! lol Maybe clematis for next year. This shot almost matches the one from '06. Please note the mutant GE. I call it a mutant because it lived!! lol And if your screen looks like mine, 2006 and 2008 pics side by side.
