Nitrogen: What it does for your soil and plants

Near the end of April, Albert_135 started a thread: What is phosphorus supposed to effect?

Albert asked, among other questions, "What is the function of phosphorus in the chemistry/physiology of plants?"

I thought this was a great question. It was educational to read the posts and the links of others in followup replies. And I think it could be helpful to many of us here, to talk about the specific N-P-K nutrients (and other nutrients) common in soil.

So, to lead off...
What is the function of nitrogen in the chemistry and the physiology of the soil, and of plants? Other questions that might inspire you to write: where does nitrogen come from, where does it go, how does it work, and why is it important?

Good links are invited, and anecdotes about your own garden success stories (and your failures) with nitrogen. No bomb threats, please. [1]

All the best,

-Patrick
