Soil Ammendments Question

Hi,

I'm planning a planting bed in an area with a lot of sandy soil. What is the best way to dig up an area that is about 10 x 5, rent a rototiller?

Also, how exactly do you go about adding soil ammendments? I'm assuming the process is to rototill until things are broken up, then dump a bunch of compost, peat moss, and perhaps some potting or garden soil on the area and maybe spade turn it to mix it all in?

How many inches down should I try to do the ammendment? 3-5 or more?

I have an existing young lilac (about 4 feet tall, less than 1" stem) in the area I want to till. If I bring in the tiller, should I worry that I am going to cause too much damage to the roots? Should I try to move it out and then put it back after I till?

Sorry about the endless questions, I am a newbie and have no idea.

Many people don't till at all. They put amendments on top of the soil and let the soil microbes and worms work them into the soil.

For an area of that size, if you wanted to till, you could probably do it with a garden fork. If you decide to till, it probably makes more sense to add the amendments first, so they get mixed in as you turn the soil.

It's probably not a good idea to till too close to the lilac, and moving it and putting it back wouldn't be doing it any favors, either. I would avoid the area in the immediate vicinity (at least within the drip line, an imaginary line around the plant that is defined by the outer reach of its branches). I wouldn't think you'd be planting in that area, anyway, though.

Good advice on everything, but if you're adding amendments, they should be mixed in with the soil, where the roots can use the nutrients. Laying them on the surface is fine IF you're going to put mulch on top, and IF you don't need those nutrients for a year or so.

Blueberries grow best in well drained organic soils with high water tables. Soils that are too heavy can lead to root rot and can be difficult to maintain a low pH. Rather than amending the soil it might be better to build a berm of organic material and sand and plant the blueberries there. This is common in Australia where soils are often less than ideal for blueberries. If you have gutters on your home you can purchase or make a rain barrel for irrigation water. Rain water is naturally acidic and is better for watering blueberries than well water which often has dissolved calcium and magnesium. However this is only practical for a small number of blueberry bushes. Blueberries are not difficult to grow if given the right conditions. Proper nitrogen fertilizer is also important. Urea and ammonium forms of nitrogen are best. Avoid nitrogen in the form of nitrates. Blueberries are easy to burn so it's best to fertilize on the lean side. Not sure what your winter is like but it does sound cold. Here in michigan I try to bury any pots of perennial plants I'm trying to over winter. Roots can freeze with little damage so long as the temps are not too extreme. It's those short bursts of frigid temps that kill plants in pots. If you can move them into a garage where the nighttime temps will be much more moderate they should be fine. Just make sure the pots don't dry out too much. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hopefully I can put an end to this... there was never a question about getting a soil test. As I clearly stated in my OP, I will eventually get one. What I was trying to find out was what I could safely add to this florida sand that would generally be ok without knowing the results of a soil test, just so I could go ahead and get started with the watermelons a month after I moved into my new place. My biggest question was that if I could not find a local source of decent compost, if adding bagged 50/50 compost/manure mix would be ok and I think that was sufficiently answered. One thing I wasn't necessarily clear about in my OP was that I was wanting to keep this organic if I am able to, so ground water contamination is not as much of a worry. The only thing I will be adding besides compost and/or manure would be a granulated organic fert, which I was thinking of digging in the same time as the compost/manure so that hopefully some of those nutrients will be available by the time the seeds are in the ground a month later. Karin, what a good idea about the natural juice shop and coffee shop. Our educational garden is in it's infancy, and some of our satelite programs are, too, like our compost bins, our worm bins, our soil health, our insectary, etc. I asked our local salad shop if I could have their vegetable waste for our worms, which is working out well. I pick up vegetable matter outside their back door at least once a week. (I hope they don't get sick of the same thing day after day!!) Our office staff, teachers and preschool age students also help by composting their appropriate materials. I know where a juice bar neighbors a coffee shop, so it WOULD be a good resource: fast and efficient. Thanks for the tip!!

Ammending/prepping soil in fall-prep for the spring garden

I returned this morning from what has become a twice weekly run to rid the yard here at home of organic wastes and prep the soil in a garden a few miles away. Today's haul was 7 5-gallon buckets of green "stuff." I pulled the spent China aster plants out of part of 1 of the beds in the cutting garden, went to work with the shovel, and buried the asters and the green stuff under 8 inches of dirt. Several weeks ago, I was busy doing this in a bed in the little veggie garden where the potatoes had been harvested earlier. That bed is now growing fall crops of mustard greens, bok choy and lettuce. I like doing things like this even if it takes all that shovel work. There's no compost pile to move around - well, there's one at another garden. By digging out only about 25 square feet at a time, I make steady progress without killing myself and all the material is instantly gotten rid of. Eight inches of soil is adequate for any small plant. By the '10 growing season, decomposition will be well underway and any plant will live for quite a good number of weeks in the top of the bed before its roots ever reach the 'o9 organic matter I've been burying. I'll add fertilizer to that top 8 inches in the Spring. Also, by the time I'm done with whatever beds I can finish this year - the garden will have a well-cultivated look going into the snows of Autumn. Actually, if you put them on top and depending on your soil, a year may be minimum, even with your sand.

I put good manure compost and mulch on top of a blackberry garden I planted and a year later when a few of the plants had died I dug them up and was astonished to find under my compost and mulch, the same soil. It had not even changed color.

Ever since mixing amendments into the soil I have not lost a plant. Most of the time now I'm not even mixing in compost. It's just vegitative waste live shredded leaves and grass, and a make the beds much larger than needed mixed in with a tiller.

My experience with Lake Michigan beach sand is that tilling organic matter into the soil will never get any level of humus into the soil. The only way I could get reserves of organic matter, humus, to build up in this sand here is to put the OM on the soil as a mulch, not till it in, and maintain that mulch. Tilling, expecially in sand, introduces large volumes of air that apparently stimulate the soil bacteria to rapidly digest any organic matter in the soil.

I have a question. Do you currently have grass growing on this area? If so, how are you planning to remove the grass? Also, BEFORE you start adding all of the soil amendments (which is a great idea, don't get me wrong) maybe it would also be a great idea to have your soil tested in order to find out just what kind of soil you are dealing with. Is it acidic, neutral or alkaline? That question alone could change the kinds of amendments you use, depending on what you want to grow there. Also, what are the current values for nitrogen, phosphorous and potash? That will tell you a lot about how much you need to add, and if you should also add a bit of fertilizer. If you have a local home extension agent, that would be a great place to start in terms of getting your soil tested. I have also used those home tests you can purchase, and have found them to be reasonably accurate. And I would do more than one test, if I were doing it myself, just to duplicate my findings and make sure they were correct. (Testing soil isn't my area of expertise! The first time I did it, I got it all wrong!) One point they make in the Master Gardener course is to check more than one area, since the composition of the soil can change over a relatively short distance.

I grew up in Michigan, and we had a HUGE garden (actually it was more like a small farm). We raised chickens and used to till in their used bedding every spring AND fall. Eventually, we had pretty decent soil. Good luck!

You're right, that fact has been scientifically substantiated. But they say if you do need to till, only go over it once, don't keep doing it. Some people think they need to turn the soil into a talcum powder consistency, when the reality is that if you till OM into it and leave bits sticking up, it helps draw the rain into the soil, instead of having the soil's natural surface tension (if it's dry) repel the water.
