Pear trees yielding dwarfed fruit- why/

I posted this on the "Fruits" forum several days ago, and while it seems to be getting read nobody there has answered it yet, so I though I would raise the question here.

In summer of 2007 a number of different people took pears that never reached full size in to the country extension agent for the horticulturist there to look at, and she was uncertain as to the cause. Her best guess, after ruling out fireblight and other disease, was that the unusually hot conditions had contributed to a calcium deficiency- not that the soil was calcium deficient, but that inadequate or irregular water supply had caused the plant to lack calcium at some critical point in the fruits' formation.

Can anyone here comment? She didn't claim that she had the answer, but thought the calcium connection might be it.

I'd appreciate any insights.

Thank you,

Mark
