Weedeater has erratic idle

I have an old Weedeater, a GTI19 I believe it is.

Lately, it has deveoped a problem I seem to be unable to fix. The original symptom were that it would not idle. It would die when the throttle was released despite running srongly when in use. Follwing the procedures outlined in the owner's manual for adjusting the idle as well as the high and low speed screws, I got it to idle as it originally did. (Yes, I did the procedures while the engine was hot.)

within five mintues of weedeating, it would no longer idle, It died. I went through the process again, however, this time, it would not return to idle at all, but coninued racing along.

I replaced the air filter, which looked to be somewhat clogged, went through the adjustment process again and this time it would return to idle, but VERY slowly. Instead of instantly returning to idle when the throttle was released, it would gradually idle down. Sometimes, after idling down, it would slowly increase RPMs.

Any suggestions? Gas mixture is good. There seem to be no leaks anywhere.
