27 F here this morning...again

Here in north Florida, we had yet another freeze - very late in the year. As before, new growth had been emerging on most trees and new damage was incurred. This is the 3rd such freeze this year.Some native trees such as hickories, Celtis laevigata, Quercus michauxii etc. had their new growth frozen off in Feb., started to recover and put out new growth, only to be frozen again last night. Tonight we have already set another record (its 31 F) right now - should be upper 20s by morning again..And, another freeze is expected tonight. I wish the real spring would show up, this is getting old. I lost my entire peach crop and now my spring veggies look to be damaged by last night. We are also in a severe drought - looking like a rough start to the growing season.

Horrors! That's really bad for Florida! I hope your veggies will be okay, but I suspect tomatoes will be totally gone.

Completely understand the frustration. Sometimes you just can't seem to win. It doesn't help seeing all the death and black on everything around you.

I have all my veggies tucked into tents right now. They are usually fine. The radish have a layer of fiber cloth under and then the plastic over (floating, not tented, they need this a bit more). I've never lost anything under tents, and at church we have never bothered to cover carrots, beets, or broccoli. Your chinese broccoli may have problems. Mine is already beginning to fade. Mine is tented for the evening. Laying old sheets over things also helps. When they are in the ground I use short stakes to hold them up between the veggies and just weigh down the sides and ends to keep the sheet from floating away in the wind. I put a stick in the middle of a container and then throw an old pillowcase over the whole thing...

All i pulled the back of the set off and looked at the CRT PCB, found R3340 and noticed nothing. nothing on the whole board - resistors, diodes, capacitors etc. - was burned, smoked, destroyed. but i figured what the heck, its only a dollar. so i bought the resistors and some solder removal braid. when i had extracted the resistor my multimeter confirmed suspicions....it was dead. so i tossed a new one in and bam, it works. therefore, even if it isnt burned up, if the symptoms fit the prognosis, swap R3340 for a new 10 ohm 1/2 watt from radio shack thanks everyone for your help alex

Repair or replace Hotpoint Dryer - 27 years old

Having ANY dryer or machine work for 13 years with no service calls, Somebody is doing something RIGHT. So its 27 years old, good4U. You probably have a lint build up just under the lower heating element and thats what you are smelling. You didn't mention how many are using this dryer, not that it matters if its 27 years old, and hasn't been worked on in 13 years. It probably needs the front glides and rear cheap bearing, and belt, and idler pully. So this dryer doesn't owe you a cent, for all these parts, and labour, the tech should be able to do this in a hour call out, if you are not way out in the boon docks. Because the tech has not opened it up to clairify the cost, lets say all these parts and 1 hours labour, at 60 hour to 80.00 that some charge now. And parts at 80.00 as I don't know what they charge in your area, as I am in Canada. Most of the new high end dryers a call out for them is 150.00 plus and they are new, yours is 27. Always good to hear about the old stuff still doing its thing. Brent@CanBC

Landscape Message: May 27, 2016From Cape Cod Region report: "Many Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) suffered from the rapid temperature drop over the Valentine’s Day weekend and again with the low temperatures of 18° F, 22° F, and 24° F in early April. That killing freeze occurred after buds had begun to swell and even show some green. At this point, many, if not most Bigleaf hydrangea only have growth coming from the base of the plant. Prune out all deadwood and don’t expect a lot of flowers this year, unless it is one of the re-blooming cultivars. Pee Gee type hydrangeas are fine. The marginally hardy Crepe myrtle here on the Cape also took a hit with the late spring freeze and many have also been killed to the ground."

It has been below normal here as well for most of March, it seems. But, there has been no damage as nothing has really budded and curiously enough, our minimums have been milder than yours! How is that for weird.

P.S., I understand Greenland has been record warm though!

FYI, the cause of Greenland being record warm, and eastern US being record cold are related. There is a super blocking high over Greenland, bringing the warmth, while forcing the cold down its west side into the eastern US. From this pattern the jet stream at times has ridden from western Greenland, up over the pole into Norther Siberia, and back across the pole down the eastern side of Greenland. A truly EXCEPTIONAL jet stream pattern. And really not so different to what brought Sandy into NJ. It was similar blocking high over Greenland that sent Sandy the way it went.

arktrees has the Greenland thing correct. Unusual cold in NW Europe is caused by Arctic air moving west from Siberia. This continues westward over the high N Atlantic into Greenland's east coast, but by then, the air isn't Arctic, it's been warmed by the open ocean to freezing or slightly above.

Cold here but light frosts my Larix principsis are in leaf
but no damage they are in woodland.I do hope it warms
up soon with some rain.

That's colder than us in the mid-Atlantic. Wanna know what I think? It's Spring Break right? Just think of all of those rowdy, out-of-control kids in Florida. Whatever they are doing they its making the weather gods very unhappy:)

That 27 F. low is impressive for this time of year. Here, there are some factors that may actually work against it getting quite that low at this time of year (urban heat island,wind, proximity to the ocean, and even soil type). Supposed to be another cold front coming in the new week, but hope to bottom out at 34. f.. Then a rebound. What a difference from last year though when wild fires were breaking out in early April due to warmth and dry conditions.
