Plants using twitter networking site

Here's a good one I saw on yahoo. Now my trees can complain to a web site monitored by other gardenweb users who can peer pressure me into taking care of them lol.

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chances are you've never had a conversation with your house plants but if they could talk, what would they say? "Water me."

Researchers at New York University's interactive telecommunications program have come up with a device that allows plants to tell owners when they need water or if they've had too much via the social network blogging service Twitter.

"Obviously plants can't talk or Twitter directly, so we have to help them along with that," said Rob Faludi, co-creator of the device called Botanicalls.

The device is made of soil-moisture sensors that are connected to a circuit board. They measure the level of moisture, and then communicate the information to a microcontroller."

If I was a New York taxpayer or a student paying tuition at New York University, I'd really appreciate that my money was going to such a valuable project.

If you don't use any of these services I'm sure they can be confusing. In the 50's my parents didn't understand why I walked around with a 'transistor radio' held up to my ear! Twitter is often used by groups of friends to keep track of what they are currently doing. A message like "Headed to coffee shop on main street" is an invitation to your friends to join you there. In my weight watchers meetings a group has gotten together to exercise and walk together. "Walking tomorrow morning from Blanchard Park parking lot - 7am" or "at the court, anyone want to play tennis?". Another friend is part of a birdwatch group and left work early on Friday because she received "SwallowTail Kite by Waterford Lakes!". Casey is obviously using it in other ways as well, to connect with other photographers. I hadn't thought of it as a tool for that. For job hunters, there's another great site called Linked In. If you haven't checked that out you should! Especially for upper level jobs companies are checking out references at LinkedIn.com. Kate

Well, I for one like FB. My step daughter is really bad at not keeping in touch and last time her Dad, my DH,tried to call her on her birthday, she told him she had company and couldn't talk and would call back and of course never did. He hates to talk on the phone and for him to call her was quite an undertaking, needless to say he has never called her back and just sends her a card. Because of her rarely keeping in touch I never know what is going on with the 4 GDs. Being on FB I found out one of them was in RN training and going to get married and was able to contact her and my DDs and family and myself went to the wedding in Al. this spring. I have lots of nieces and nephews and they do not keep in touch but this old aunt does like to keep up with them and can do via FB. I don't want to talk and chat with them as we have nothing in common but do like to see their pictures and know about their kids and grandkids. I block the stuff I don't want am just open for friends and relatives and if they start getting out of hand I just block them.lol.

Nope Lyndsey but only because I do not nor have I ever twittered.....:) AH HA! There IS a twitter scam! I tried to access this Twitter account but of course, did not remember my password. the whole point of the garden.. IS TO TURN OFF THE DARN computer.. and go out there and enjoy nature..

not hook nature up to an electric sucking ... good for nothing.. chain me to the desk .... in the dark basement .... computer...

One can't wait for that fad to go away so we don't have to hear about twitter and tweet and twits. There are perfectly good tweets going on outside, and have been for millions of years.

Baaaack in my day, we went outside to twitter. And we LIKED it!

Spring is finally springing and the birds here are getting very vocal. The twittering today was deafening. They've got lots of cover, pond, creeklets, bubblers, fountains, rocks, grass, moss, seed, running water -- very happy birds. Until the hawk shows up. Then it suddenly gets silent. I work in the yard and their song is my social networking :-)
