husqvarna 326LDx trimmer (multi-tool)

does anyone know what drive shaft system this husqvarna 326LDx trimmer uses: solid, hollow, or flex cable?

as i mentioned before, i'm leaning towards the tanaka TBC-250SF smartfit trimmer, but my dealer is suggesting i look at this husqvarna instead from a price perspective. thanks for your help!

My dealer stopped carrying all Husky equipment. Claimed the quality has dropped signficantly.

Don't have any personal opinion on this, just what my local saw shop says. I do know the Husky clearing saw I bought in 1995 is run 30 hours a week from March through July each year, and after 10 years, is still going strong.

It's a solid shaft setup. If is's like the rest of the Husqvarna stuff it's good stuff.

The TBC250SF is a good unit also we have sold several of these and have had no complaints. I bought a TBC340 trimmer this spring and it is one fine machine.

I would probably buy the Tanaka if I were looking to buy that type equipment.

I can directly compare the quality of the Husqvarna and Stihl split shaft offerings, because I own one brand, and my parents own the other. The shafts on the Stihl are the same across the whole spectrum of powerheads. The coupling on the Stihl is cast magnesium, and the drive shafts are solid steel. On the Husqvarna, the drive shafts are a spun steel flex cable, and the coupler is stamped steel welded to the drive tube. With a Husqvarna, probably being purchased at Lowe's, you will get a line head. However, all the attachments Lowe's sells are MTD, and not even up to Husqvarna's quality, let alone Stihls. With the Stihl, every attachment is professional quality. With MTD, you're looking at light homeowner use only. Stihl sells attachments for every task, but you don't actually have to purchase them individually. For instance, the only difference between the Stihl line trimmer and brush cutter heads is the debris shield. The gearhead and drive tube are the same. So if you get the line trimmer, you can convert to the brush cutter head in about 5 minutes for $20. Same thing with the tiller attachment. You can physically stick any of the YardBoss multi-motor attachments on the tiller gearbox. This gets you the powersweep for about $100 off if you wanted that. If you tell me what attachments you need, and what you intend to do with them I can recommend you the least expensive route to get there. Oh, and the Stihl blower attachment is not even a comparison to the MTD job. The MTD will struggle to move grass clippings, the Stihl blower will throw wet leaves across your yard.

Husqvarna's are not crap. They still make good stuff. Yes they have been purchased by the electolux company, but many other high end equipment manufacturers hae been bought by electrolux. Most on here probably have not heard of Target (not the chain store). They make top of the line road saws 'with big 36 inch blades" and masonry saws etc. Top of the line stuff and they too are owned by electrolux. http://www.targetblue.com/node1269.asp The Husqvarna trimmers are very good still as well as their chinsaws. They also make one of the few commercial grade pure 4 stroke trimmers (Honda is the other). The 4 stroke is a little heavier than a 2 stroke, but starts way easier and you can use regular gas in it. I have a Honda 4 stroke that I just love, but am thinking of getting a Husqvarna multi tool 324dx I beleive the model is. It has a quick change head system and can take a pole saw attachment and edger attachment along with a cultivator. That would be pretty handy in my book. Please don't sell the Husqvarna's short. The others on your list are generally the common commercially used trimmers. They are light weight and can take abuse. Very good machines. Pros like them because they are durable and light weight so they do not get tired as much after an 8-10 hour day. That is why the 4 strokes are not as popular in this segment. It's all about the weight. I like the added features of the 4 stroke and do not mind the weight as I generally only use it for a couple hour at a time. One other 2 stroke machine to consider would be Tanaka.

I have Troybilt multi tool trimmer. In fact it is my first trimmer and I still have it. The engine is actually pretty good. I don't like their string trimmer head and I looked at their hedge trimmer blade and I don't like it a bit. As I said, the hedge trimmer quality is very important. This is what the poster named. I actually bought and return their pole saw attachment because after I put it together, it is way too short, only about 7 feet which is useless. I end up buying a remington electric pole saw. In my opinion, you can go cheap on the string trimmer, you have to pay for a good hedge trimmer, it really make a difference. Want a good cheap hedge trimmer, get Kawasaki 600S 24" hedge trimmer on ebay as low as $229, those have real blades and is light duty commercial quality. Then get a cheap MTD trimmer if you want. But I would still stay with something like the Echo SRM225, Husky 125L or Kawasaki KTR27 all at about $200 and all commercial quality. You can get both for below $500.

The 250 is a nice mid size saw. I have that model and am very pleased with it. Unfortunately I do not have nearly as much land as you do so I do not get to use it as often as I would like. It performs quite well for my needs. If you know you won't go any larger than 12" trees, that is a good size. I have heard others say that you should not go larger than an 18" bar on it. The saw just does not have enough power for 20". If you plan on regularly cutting some firewood, you might want to step up the size of the saw. I have not cut much firewood yet so I don't have any insight on that particular issue. Do check out the arboristsite forum. Plenty of information. Your question has been covered many times there. You only have to watch out for them talking you up to a monster saw :). You also should get some safety equipment such as chaps, hearing protection and helmet if you do not already have them. You will also need to buy chain oil. I like the Stihl oil as do many others (~$6/gallon). I highly recommend you buy a file and guide to sharpen your chain. You will know very quickly when your chain needs to be sharpened. With a little practice you can do it in a couple minutes. The SRM210 should be able to handle all your trimming needs. It sounds like you can make the FS90 a dedicated brushcutter. Have you considered a wheeled brushcutter like DR (I forget the other makes)? I am not sure how much they cost but they might make the job go quicker. Just a thought. Some on this forum wrote of a brush blade called a beaver blade. It looked like a blade that had a saw chain mounted to it. I have not purchased one but the idea looks good. It might make quicker work of your brush. Since you are planning on purchasing both a brushcutter and chainsaw. I can recommend the helmet system with integrated hearing protection and mesh face shield. It is comfortable enough that I wear it when I am running my trimmer. The mesh face shield really keeps everything out of your eyes. I purchased mine at www.baileys-online.com. They are a a real nice company to deal with. Very knowledgeable and they go out of their way to help you out. They deal with alot of pro arborists but highly appreciate the homeowner business. Whichever route you go with your equipment purchase, good dealer support should be high on your list of requirements. It sounds like from what you have written that the equipment will meet your needs. For trimmers and brushcutters, many also like Tanaka, Shindaiwa and Echo. Any reason not to get another Echo? For saws in the size range you are looking at, most recommendations go to Stihl, Husky and Dolmar. Good luck with your landscaping. It sounds like a nice little project. Take some pictures. You'll be amazed in a few years looking back on them and seeing the progress. Let us know what you end up with.

It is solid and I'll tell you why I know.....
I bought the Husqvarna 326 LDX and was pleased with the grass trimmer. I decided to purchase the other attachments: cultivator, hedge trimmer, and pole saw. Very expensive but figured it would last me a long time. When the attachments arrived the instructions for assembly were not very clear. With the pole saw they showed a diagram of how to align the chain. I did it just like the picture and tried to cut a branch down. It turns out the chain was facing the wrong direction but I did the way the instructions told me to do. THe attachments DO NOT attach as easily as the trimmer attachment it originally came with. The 5 prong grear inside the shaft has to be slammed about 10 times before it finally engages with the "male" counterpart of the main shaft. Then when removing it the gears stay attached and pull the internal part of the pole OUT!!!!!
I called the company I bought it from and they are looking into it. I will post more info as I get it. It seems like nothing is well made anymore. My neighbor is a landscaper I didn't listen to him when he told me to buy REDMAX. I bought Husqvarna because I figured it would be a great Swedish made product just like German autos have a great reputation. I think I was wrong but hopefully this will be resolved.

The company is sending me a replacement part that should resolve the problem. If anyone really cares.

Actually, I bought the same unit last spring. I also bought the conversion kit to put a saw blade on it. I'm happy with the unit and it's good to hear of other peoples experiences with it. I haven't bought any attachments for it yet so your post would be a heads up for a potential problem. It really rips through the stuff. Heres a pic. No, I didn't cut those logs with it, but tookout some decent size saplings.

I bought this trimmer last year and got the rototiller attachment as well. Both work extremely well.

The rototiller is a little thin in the width, but that is perfect for above grown garden. Spring finally reached us here in Maine and I used the tiller attachment again just 10 minutes ago. It is a dream.

The weed trimmer end is pretty standard. Kevlar string double wound with a nice tapper. The string comes out easily and does a great job. This trimmer is positioned as high end consumer, low end profession. I think that is why they have the smaller 'professional' grass/string guard. This does mean you get some blow back on your shoes/boots and pant legs. Wear your gardening clothes when in use.

The best thing though is that this trimmer starts on the first or second pull, ALWAYS. Last winter I filled it to the top with Stabil filled gas. Stored for 6 months across our long winter. Took it out today, pumped the primer until it filled with gas and turned the choke on. One pull and it started but stalled after a second. Turned choke off and pulled again. VROOOOOMMMM..... They said you 'might' need choke after sitting for the winter, but it didn't. AMAZING.

Switching the attachment does take a little getting used to. But, once I got the hang of it I do much better lining them up. I would rather have something tight and to spec, than a lot of slop and play between the drive and the attachment.

How much was the saw attachment. I am thinking of bushwacking my alder patches out back.

Finally for the Conversion Kit: 537 04 85-02
Paired it with a Stihl Chisel Tooth Blade (resharpenable).

This thing burns through alders and small saplings up to 3" no problem.. VVVIIPPP... down.

The things I have noticed. The alder/saplings sort of sit on the blade after you cut it. Will not really cut up bushes/thorns/undergrown, so once I get rid of the alders I'll put the 255-4 back on and take care of the brush.

Having a split shaft, even with solid rod.. I'll be using it sparingly. But, as Vanfellis said in a helpful e-mail, better to have what you need once in a while than to not have what you need.

The new shield from the brush cutter conversion kit is much more substantial than the shield that came with the trimmer in the first place. I'll probably keep it on for the trimmer head as well. The little one it came with did not really block that much blow-back and I would end up covered in grass.

Anyone can tell me whether the 326 engine is all metal or the lower part of the crankcase make of plastics?

I believe that was, "better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it". But, close enough. LOL
I've gotten the edger attachment for mine and have no problem taking it on or off the unit.
I used the trimmer for about 2 1/2 hrs straight today. I love it.

Used the 326LDx to clear a new snowmobile trail over the past couple of weekends. About 600 yards total, around 10-15 feet wide.

Started first with a Stihl saw blade and took down all the alders and saplings. Pulled them to the brush pile.

Then moved to the 255-4 and took out all the standing twigs, yearling saplings, and thorn bushes. Now I'm all ready for winter. ;-)

I almost got the 326LDX because Husky and Shindaiwa are the only two that offer short reach articulate hedge trimmer attachment. I end up getting the Shindaiwa because my dealer don't carry it in stock and Shindy has a special that you buy the head with any attachment, you get a string trimmer attachment for free.

I read a lot of good things about Husky 326. It is still the old 2 cycle technology, none of that strato crap!!!! Must be very easy to start and no warmup needed.
