Alarming decline of Rugosas

Is there something going on with rugosas. A disease? Or is it just old age.

Sarah van Fleet is dead, 8 years old. F.J.Grootendorst 13 years old is down to a few canes. Fru Dagmar much smaller than last year. Belle Poitevine (8 years old) is the only one about the same. Then I have 2 Robusta's that are definitely declining. They have always been stalwarts (nine years old).

Rugosa Alba is another story. It is, as many may know, is a monster suckering profusely. Now the mother plant is definitely not healthy perhaps because of the energy spent on growing its' offspring. But that has not been so in past years. It is 9 years old.

This year was the first year I was able to penetrate the thicket to prune the 4 planted together. This may have something to do with their decline. However the 2 Robusta's have been pruned perhaps not enough as they were very leggy.

It's sad when your old reliables become not so. And we didn't have a hard winter!
