Swelling on canes of Rugosa rose
Comments (6)Sounds like stem borers or mossy rose gall. Remove canes in the fall. http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/components/6594-07.html Rose Stem Borer The rose stem borer, Agrilus aurichalceus, damages rose canes when larvae tunnel in a spiral fashion beneath the bark, girdling and killing the canes (figures below). Their presence is indicated when a cane dies above the point of borer tunneling. Leaves on the infected cane turn brown as they die, creating a "flag" among healthy, green-leaved canes. On close observation, a swelling or gall on the infected cane can be seen below the dead tissue, indicating where the borerÂs tunneling occurred. The gall formation weakens canes and it is common to see infected canes broken off by wind. The quickest and most effective control is removal and disposal of infected canes in fall. From top to bottom: rose stem borer flag, rose stem borer gall, and rose stem borer tunneling. Mossy Rose Gall Mossy rose galls are caused by Diplolepis spinosa, a cynipid gall wasp. These galls are common on wild roses of North America, from Ontario to Alberta in Canada and throughout most of the northern United States. They are becoming common on Rugosa cultivars.17 The presence of these insects is indicated by the formation of spherical, golf ball-size, spiny galls on the canes of host plants. The development of these galls is stimulated in the spring by newly hatched larvae. The galls encase the larvae until adult wasps emerge the following spring. The galls are unsightly and alter the plantÂs shape. They also stress the host plant, behaving like nutrient sinks, drawing nutrients away from the rest of the plant.17, 18 Large numbers of galls on a plant can kill the plant. Insecticides have no effect on the wasp that causes mossy rose gall. The most effective control is physical removal and disposal of galls in autumn after leaves have dropped and galls are visible. It is important to dispose of all galls since even a single missed gall can produce and reintroduce 30 to 40 mature wasps to the garden the following spring....See MoreRugosa Rose, got it all walmart
Comments (15)jerijen I'm just saying that soil & water pH may not be the problem, it might be the type of rugosa that she has. I was commenting about the heat only because of what you said you had experienced recently. I love many things about KS, but the heat plus humidity in summer is not one of them. Not having to use A/C sounds wonderful. I think michaelg is right. Get rid of the plant. There are others (other rugosa hybrids or other types of roses) that should do much better for her. Wal-Mart isn't the best of places to get roses. As you found out bug_girl deals are not necessarily all they're cracked up to be. So what kind of rugosa did you buy or did it just say 'Rugosa' and you don't really know exactly what it is? We're all here trying to help. Spraying it might not be doing it any good either. Rugosa don't do well with spraying. Shovel pruning the rose is a good suggestion. I'd listen especially to the advice given by those who live in CA....See MoreRugosa Roses, other NO care roses? :-)
Comments (19)woolywoof, your availability of hardy roses probably has more to do with being in Canada than being in zone 4. If I head to nurseries in zone 4 New York, the situation is likely to be even more dire than it is here. Lack of availability of roses that do what I want roses to do is probably part of the reason I became so interested in rooting cuttings. Several wonderful roses are probably better known as pass along plants than in the nursery trade. This unfortunately doesn't make me a very good source of information as to where you should get your roses. I've bought more roses from Mike Lowe than any other source. He's in Nashua. Is Mike still in the nursery business? I don't know. Pickering, as mentioned, is a good source. I know Paul has gotten a bunch of his roses from Spring Valley in Wisconsin. I've heard nothing but good things about Spring Valley. I've often wanted to order from Corn Hill in New Brunswick, but never come up with a big enough order to make it work out. Corn Hill is Robert Osborne's nursery. If you don't have his book "Hardy Roses" you should. You should also have Suzanne Verrier's books. You want to avoid the nurseries that ship little twigs. For the money nurseries charge, you want them to send you a real plant. I'd like to be able to recommend Ashdown, but I've never ordered from him. Oddly enough, most of my recent purchases have come from Sequoia. Certainly Ralph Moore has no reason to specialize in hardy for the northeast roses, but he does have some neat oddments that I can't get anywhere else. He ships little twigs, but at least the price reflects this....See MoreRugosas and Species Roses
Comments (19)Perma, that is a tough question. I had this for a fungicide for a while. The leaves has brown colouring almost taking over but it is inside and nothing on the other side. It is clean on backside. I know it is not rust Bec we don't get rust in FL. I show it one rose person who never seen anything like that in his 80 yrs of life in FL. He was very baffled. He is a sweetheart :) who is also a Rosarian all his life. On Nov 4th, my friend saw the leaves and in a sec said pls get any fungicide from store and spray it it else it will die. I went same day and actually spray it taking no chances. Today, it had no sign of any thing and all very green leaves. I spray only twice . It recovers real fast and today is Nov 20th. So, in 16 days it is so green as if nothing happens. It has rusty brownish colour and very hard to describe. To be honest with you, I Google and Google and found nothing on line . Absolutely nothing !! That same day, I cut about 10 odds leaves ready to take it to extension office. I wanted to post it here but I feel like I bothering silly questions which I did not know that my rose could go to heaven. I am sorry if I confused a lot of Rosarians here but describing a fungal is extremely hard without pics..lol But I tried :) jin...See Morestrawchicago z5
