That's for sure never throw stuff out. The minute you do, it could have served another purpose. Been there, done that.

So, am I the only one who doesn't know what "tsuga" means??

Nope I don't have a clue on "tsuga" And I do throw stuff out and I don't buy the need it as soon as I do "myth" !

Agreed, tox. I often feel very guilty for the things I buy. Just a simple tv dinner, or fast food has sooo much waste where a good majority goes straight to the landfill. Pitiful...

Lloyd, what happens when you're cranking that thing in 10th gear sitting on top of it and you get to the end of the hose? Whap! Either on your butt or....depending on which way you're facing. Not to rain on your parade, but you may want to rethink the Hosemobile!

Ya, and a guy would have to pretty bow-legged to make it work! I'm thinking the obvious pain it would cause won't be worth the effort.

But I bet I'd win the prize on America's Funniest Home Videos!

The town is doing some water main/street repair and they dug up an old culvert that got kinda mangled on one end. It was going to scrap but part of it was still decent so we cut the good part off and brought it home.

Lo and behold it came in handy as a deflector for the back of the manure spreader that converts it into a poor man's {{gwi:280068}}. Them puppies are over 25 grand! Cost us about seven bucks for the bolts and works like a charm. ;-)

Man, if you've got the tools, skills and initiative, you hardly have to buy anything these days. Nice work. Most people don't get that Reuse comes before Recycle.

Back on the hose reels, what I find breaks down most often is the stupid rubber gasket that seals the rotating part against the stationary part. Water starts pouring out and you're done. I have two leaking ones right now, gotta open those up and see if the seals are replaceable and obtainable.

All the funnies aside the title of this thread is so very important in this "throw-away" society we live in. There are very few "true mechanics" anymore, just bolt-on a new part, don't repair it. If it breaks, don't fix it just buy a new one. Forget being creative, someone else has done that for you, just buy it. If the economy keeps going the way it is I think that conserving and making-do with what we have will return. I save almost everything that I feel will have a use someday, and often times it has.

A couple of months ago, my brother-in-law called belly-aching that he was tied down to his house ALL WEEKEND because it would take him that long to burn up the old wooden deck he just replaced.....HOLD THE FIRE ! ! !

We went by with a trailer and got all the CEDAR he was ready to burn. 4 x 4 support posts, 2 x 5 decking, 2 x 8 stringers, 2 X 10 joists up to 16 feet long, and all sorts of 1 x 1 spindles ! ! ! Who cares if some ends were a little rotted? We just trimmed the nasty stuff and used the rest!

We finshed one raised bed garden (4' X 16' X 2.5') and are now finishing another 16' x 16' raised area on a slope. It only cost up $30 of deck screws and a couple of bags of cement for the corner posts. That's alot of lumber recycled!

We are filling it up with a free pile of dirt from a lady's yard a few miles away. She had sidwalks put in, and the contractor wouldn't dispose of the topsoil he removed. All she wants is to have us level it out and throw some grass seed over the flat spot!

If we have any leftover long boards, we are going to make a "turtle log" to jut out from our shore on the lake. The natural log on the next lot has 20+ turtles on it everyday, and there are always more that are swiming around it. Cedar should work pretty well. We will just tie a couple of clear plastic grape juice jugs under the floating end so it won't sink away.

Great deal on that deck wood beemer, thumbs up! And free topsoil too.

I heat my house with wood from the city yard waste dropoff. Went over there the other night and got a whole trailer load plus two new-looking RR ties for a retaining wall project that were better than the ones I paid for at Home Despot. The city isn't supposed to chip up treated wood anyway, so unless we take it they have to haul it to the landfill.

Old decks! I forgot about that.

One of the guys at work replaced his deck and I scavenged a lot of the lumber. Because some of the yard waste bags are, how shall I say, a bit sniffy, I wanted a place I could wash up a bit and change into non-sniffy clothes before I went home. We decided to build a wash-up shed beside the shop.

Inside it has a sink and an old washing machine someone threw out. The washing machine only has one water line hook-up because the other is broken. No matter, we only have one water line coming into the shed. On a sunny day, that water is dang hot. Now I can wash my smelly farm clothes (some days I'm so ripe they won't let me into the shop before I wash-up and change) in this machine so that I don't put all the crap through the one we wash our regular clothes in.

Opposite the washing machine is where a, Jenkins adapted, humanure composting toilet is almost set up.

Sometime I can't keep track of the junk good stuff we have around here! ;-)

Here I thought I had myself a fairly complete collection of garden implements, but I do not have a rubber chicken. Why do I feel that I now must have one, even though I can't think of a single useful thing to do with one?
