over in the shrub forum.. you can see how the LILACS WENT NUTS THIS YEAR .. see them back behind the chimes ..

lets walk just past the giant chimes ... and look toward the deck .... eskimo sunset is in the tree forum ...

now turn and look toward the gate ... the variegated lilac is in the shrub post

Thanks for the replies. I'm posting a birds eye view that gives you an idea of how our backyard looks as well as my neighbors. You can also see how our rear awning takes up additional space compared to our next door neighbor. I mostly agree w/ @catkim's comments and this really didn't come to our attention until our next door neighbor trimmed the branches of their tree that was coming onto our property (the branch was hitting our garage, otherwise we would have let it keep growing). Maybe you guys are right - accept the amount of privacy the current fence gives us and focus on jazzing it up w/ some nice plants, furniture etc... It's a 2br/1bath and since we are going to start a family soon we will be trading up sooner or later. Of the various higher priced projects on our list (bathroom addition, some remodeling etc...) landscape design is one of the cheaper projects we are considering to make our time here nice and comfortable. Thanks!

My goodness, it was very interesting to look back and see what's here and what's now gone. Yesterday I dug out the overgrown spiderworts and replaced them with echinaceas. I always have loads of echinaceas reseeding so they're a big fill in when I'm ripping out. The bed with the yuccas is full of some weeds--it must get a major redo this fall. For the most part it all looks the same except things have filled in and gotten bigger. I probably have two dozen crepe myrtles here, all grown from seed I traded for on the forums. I took seeds from all around the country and mixed them together. The seeds were WS (probably in late January) and they germinated well in mid spring. The seedlings were kept in a holding be their first year--I was surprise to see some lavender blooms. The second year they were transferred to a back fence border where they were another year, after that I started moving them about the garden. I now have two crepe myrtle hedges and some extras still in the back fence border. Crepe Myrtles have a varied hardiness, usually to zone seven but some species can do zone six quite well. If you want to increase your crepe myrtles then trade for seeds from around the country and WS them all together. After a couple of years you will know which of them are hardy for your garden. It's three years time between sowing and seeing a blooming and prunable hedge from your crepe myrtle seeds--for me it was a grand experiment to see if I could succesfully germinate them with WS here in zone seven; I am absolutely delighted with my crepes. Bee swarm in my backyard

We had a huge swarm lodge in a rock wall next to our mailbox 2 years ago. Our mailman refused to deliver mail out of concern for his safety, which was ok because we also were not about to risk stings in order to open the mailbox! We found a beekeeper who would come out and remove them but only if the hives and bees had not been chemically sprayed or treated ( which they had not). He found 2 queens, so you can imagine the number of bees he had to relocate. Good luck! Marilyn

I loved taking a stroll through your yard in this and other posts. I like the shot approaching the hosta garden and feeling like I just walked into it. Can't imagine how you do it without a big crew to keep it all looking that great.

I'm finally giving in and using some Round-up, as minimal as possible, because the grass is killing me. It is the worst weed, and that's saying a lot because I have so many.

I learn a lot from the information you give on GardenWeb.

i use 41% credit.. which is generic roundup sold at the local mill store ... about 1/2 the price of roundup

make sure it is 'plus' .. which includes a sticker/spreader within the formula

Ken, so far I'm not using much Roundup, but a generic form is good to know in case I ever need to tackle my hillside "meadow." I'll put that in my notes.

I like to keep my yard as bird and animal friendly as possible, so I'm still working inch by inch on the weeds in between all the planting I'm doing.

Round Up is fairly benign if used as directed. It doesn't persist in the soil/environment, only kills what it is sprayed on.

For contrast: Weed N'Feed products containing 2,4-D persist in the soil/environment for two years or more and they off gas and drift to kill plants not intended.

If you need a weedkiller, Round Up or generic Glyphosate is one of the safest.....

a horrible acer [maple] of some kind.. copper peelable bark .. maybe acer griseum ...

surface roots that were nearly killing everything within 15 feet of it.. after 5 years ....

as it shows in the picture.. that is the only good use for an acer.. a maple ...
