Do I need to tie or stake my roses?

I planted a couple of roses in containers in February. They seem to be doing ok and growing fairly well. One is about 5 feet from the ground, so probably about 3 1/2" - 4" from the top of the container. Earlier this week, we had a couple of windy days that caused the stems to start flopping over. Today it rained and the weight of the water has caused them to just about completely touch the ground. They're not broken, just weighted down from all the wind and rain. Should these be staked or tied up so they are able to stand on their own, or will the come back up on their own?

Also interesting to see that when they fall over, the buds continue to grow upright...its all new to me obviously.

They will strengthen up eventually, but sometimes staking is a good idea to avoid damage. Wind and rain can snap the young canes (stems) off. Just depends on how bad the weather gets & how much you want to protect them.

Myself, I just let them do their thing, or I cut off the flowers and put them in a vase--this reduces the weight on the stems.

The whole plant will get stronger with age and produce thicker shoots, but stems that have flopped will not pick themselves up. If you stake them, they will get stiffer with age and later will be able to support blooms. Pruning is another approach, provided the plant is big enough to spare the loss of foliage. Cut arching stems near the top of the arch and remove spindly shoots. But I don't prune small weak plants except to cut very weak stems back a little after blooming.

A lot of this depends on what kind of Austin Rose you have. I have 6 Austins in pots currently. I planted them in 20" plastic containers that you can buy at your local Lowe's or elsewhere. Just buy some moisture control potting soil and mix in some RoseTone or other light rose fertilizer and/or compost mix and you should be good to go.

I do like the vertical look in Christina's photo, but I agree that it would be hard to train that way, and eventually, that trellis would be hard to keep upright. I like the way it grows naturally in a hanging position. My sis has one that practically reaches the floor and is beautiful. Denise in Omaha

Yeah - I obviously don't know the terminology. Apologies for that. I have wired in my previous two switches (a 15w light fixture and a garbage disposal) to the two-switch "yoke" (?) on the left. That is working fine. I just screwed in the dimmer switch to fill the gap and see how it'll look, though it isn't hooked up to anything yet. Here's what it looks like now: I didn't realize that work box volume was factor, either. Do they make 2-gang old work boxes can accommodate what I'm going for? I know that typically you run power to a dimmer first, then the transformer, and then the lights. But the power supply I bought from Armacost is not an AC compatible dimmer. It will only work with 12V DC voltage. Therefore I have to go: 120V Line - Transformer - Dimmer - Lights I'm wondering: can I hardwire in 14/2 romex from the transformer to the line voltage in that same work box? Then run 16 AWG back to the dimmer, then 16 AWG to my lights? Seems real tedious but I don't see how I can do it differently, given what I'm working with.

I found they all have their own personality. I had a crawler and one that went straight up. So you likely have to stake it if you want it straight upright. Its tough to tell what this one is going to do but its likely going to be a lateral upright.

So perhaps stake them for a while until they are able to completely stand on their own? I don't know that I want to prune them yet. I just planted them a couple of months ago and all the growth is new.

Yes californiaplaya you can stake them if you wish.
Since there new, just cut off the spent blooms.
