What's wrong with my Boxelder (Acer Negundo)?
Comments (7)I don't see that you asked anyone if they like box elders or not. I have one in my front yard that is 40 or 50 feet tall. I too have the problem of it messing my lawn with leaves all summer, and more and more in the last couple of weeks but I'm not about to cut it down because it's not other people favorite tree. Maybe I like trees like I like women, a bit on the trashy side. I'm sure your question was along the lines of are others having more of a problem this year and is their anything that can be done to mitigate the problem. Summer before last my tree lost so much leaf so fast in late summer that I was concerned that it might have some borer problem. I know now that wasn't the case and it was probably heat and drought related. It has recovered well last year and this and the canopy looks healthy. But we had a wet spring and a wet early summer. Now it seems that a dry spell may be affecting it again with more leaf drop. My neighbor threw out an old ross root feeder and tonight I was fooling with it as a way to get water in the ground. I also have a medium sized maple and next door, right up against my property are 4 very tall pines and a fifth large tee. So that's 7 trees in about 40 feet of space. The ground between the elder and the 5 trees is hard as a rock after not more than a week of no rain. I water the yard there but it seems to get sucked up in a hurry. Is there anything to the idea of watering with that kind of feeder that can have an effect on the situation? I'd have to get a different one as the old one leaks to much from the feed jar so I'm open to ideas within reason cost wise. I'm open to watering the tree but it's right at the sidewalk and I don't really want the water just running into the storm drain....See MoreTell me about Heirloom & Melody Parfumee
Comments (7)Melody Parfumee well deserves its place in the best of the mauves list. Mine is new this year so can't yet vouch for hardiness. The fragrance is heavenly. The flowers are quite large. I don't know if this will sound right, I find some very large blooms sort of vulgar, however to my eye Melody Parfumee has a refined character despite the large size. Blooms begin with a classic hybrid tea form, then open with reflexed petals revealing the stamens. The stems are strong and hold the flowers upright. I suppose it would make a nice cut rose. The color is just a hint warmer than my other lavenders - Blueberry Hill and Love Song. There is a faint stippling, very attractive. Great rain tolerance. I don't know Heirloom, but from the photos I'd say Melody has fewer petals. First year growth habit is more hybrid tea like than some grandifloras, though I know maturity may change that. This is a very vigorous grower. I got it from Edmunds and as usual they shipped it way to late for bare root planting. All of my Edmunds roses struggled, some failed, Melody Parfumee shot up to 4 1/2 feet and had two strong bloom cycles...all in partial shade. With growth this vigorous I'd have no hesitation trying own root. I spray with Propiconazole (Honor Guard). Even with a regular regimen many of my modern roses show varying susceptibility to black spot, especially when planted in partial shade. Melody Parfumee is perfectly clean. It looks great next to yellow. Mine is beside Sunshine Daydream and they're remarkably alike in bloom form, growth habit, and foliage. I think it might be a little too tall and leggy next to Julia or Molinieux but it would do well behind....See MoreBoxelder Bugs eating Salvia?
Comments (8)I have a real big heart when it comes to bugs. I had recently come across a boxelder bug on my living room floor and saved him from his untimely doom. I was playing a game with my son while letting the bug crawl on my hand. I started to feel a burning sensation on the tip of my finger. When I looked down to my surprise, it seemed as if the bug was biting me.When I looked to see what it was biting me with, I saw the long tube that folds under their body stuck in my finger. I was wondering if this is a rare occurrence or if the bug mistaked me for a meal....See MoreQuestion about smoke detectors
Comments (1)Yes. There have been managers/ owners sued for this even though the tenant removed the battery. My city inspectors can fine landlords for faulty smoke detectors. Many times you open the detector and the battery is there but not conected. Inspectors realize the LL would not have done this. During my inspections I would say about 1/2 are disconected, or with dead batteries....See Morej0nd03
