Comments (11)5/24/07 Hi Guys! Thanks for all the help. Sorry I used my Ebay handle here "RCS14420" instead of my handle and nick name Tbone123. Don't want to confuse anyone. I like this site and have contributed to others as well. I've learned a lot of great stuff on several issues and events from trial and errors over the years as well as posting from others here. I will follow up on the link correction and get back to you. Thanks to all. Have a great Memorial Day; let us not forget what it is for and why. God bless America and the Veterans who have given their lives to make us free! Tbone123 and/or RCS14420....See MoreCraftsman LT2000 Riding lawn mower engine won't crank
Comments (5)Thanks for the response. It's definitely a Briggs engine. Or let me put it this way, there's a big 'ol Briggs and Stratton stamp on it. The model # is 31G77. I believe that's right. Good point. Getting a voltage reading is not a true indicator of whether or not the battery is good. It wasn't smoking, only when it conked out. It was laboring, laboring, laboring, then it conked out and threw out a puff of smoke. The reason why I'm GUESSING the engine is a little sieged is because when I turn the key, it appears I have good power going toward the cranking process (you can hear and feel that jolt of energy), yet the engine "stops" it. It's almost as though there's a heavy break on the engine. When I try and spin the engine from the top by hand, it won't budge. Then again, I have no idea if you normally can spin it by hand because I've never tried to do that! Sorry for being such a newbie. From the little research that I've seen taking the spark plug out and putting penetrating oil down it, waiting an hour then trying to manually move the pistons by hand as a *possible* solution. Again, this is assuming I'm right and the engine's seized....See Moretrouble shooting riding lawn mower
Comments (4)Or possibly a cracked cylinder head or leaking head gasket. If you have run this engine for a while with this coolant/lube oil mixture in the crankcase, you can expect bearing and crankshaft damage as well. It's time for a tear down and inspect. A visual check might find a cracked head but usually requires the valves to come out to see everywhere in the plenums. Most automotive machine shops can pressure test a head (head must be off the engine) for leaks. I'm NOT familiar with this exact engine but a defective HEAD GASKET can sometimes leak coolant into the lube oil (by a breach between a coolant passage and a push rod tunnel or oil return passage) before the head gasket fails completely. With that in mind the head, head gasket, and the block need to be closely inspected for evidence of a failed head gasket BEFORE cleaning away the gasket from the head or the block. Inspection should be by someone with good knowledge of what signs to look for. (not Bill England for sure) Same caution for inspecting the crank and bearings, the person needs to be able to recognize the signs. It might be possible to find some photo illustrations somewhere on the web or in a good engine manual as to what the evidence looks like....See MoreCraftman riding lawn mower
Comments (6)By "won't do anything", I assume that it won't even click? IF SO- 1. Check the fuse even though there's no reason it should have blown. 2. It sounds like the attachment switch might have gotten knocked awry? If you look at the schematic in the owners manual (page 29/56), trace the WHITE wire from the S terminal of the key switch. It goes through the clutch brake switch, then the attachment switch to the SMALL terminal of the starter solenoid. As a quick test, simply jumper 12V to the small terminal of the solenoid. IF it cranks, the problem is in the circuit I described. IF you don't have an OM, click the link. Here is a link that might be useful: OM...See Morewrager
