Do you have a preference for the type of growth? I wouldn't say Evelyn needs support, although Evelyn is more a tall arching shrub that I doubt needs much in terms of support. Like usual I will use hoovb's Evelyn as an example. I've probably posted hoovb's Evelyn more than she has. XD Evelyn tends to be a variety of colors though, so Evelyn may not be apricot enough for you, although mine tends to lean more towards the apricot coloring.

I've had surprisingly good luck with Tamora so far. My mom has one too and it's more winter hardy than advertised. We have a dry heat in the summer, so no black spot, but I've heard it can be an issue elsewhere. Where are you in zone 5?

Arlene Francis is a pretty hybrid tea and has a nice fragrance. We saw it at Lowe's last spring, but didn't buy it and wish we had. I haven't seen it anywhere else. I'm looking for one this year to get my mom for mother's day :)

I forgot one Austin that is pale yellow/apricot fading to white and is both hardy and disease resistant.

I wholeheartedly agree with The Morden Man's suggestions of GOLDEN WINGS and ARTHUR BELL. Besides being cold hardy in my garden they have blissful perfumes. :~)

Since Terryjean hasn't chimed in yet, I'll recommend South Africa (a Kordes) for her. Based on the strength of her recommendation I bought two for myself and one for my brother. Yellow/amber flowers, very disease resistant, blooms like crazy, and gets to about 5'. I can't wait to get mine next week!

Ahh, a neighbor!

Most of what has been mentioned does not like it here. Austins will get blackspot. Buck roses either get blackspot or can't handle the winters.

Now some roses that do do reasonably well here are Westerland and its sports, Autumn Sunset and Lemon Meringue, and an old HT called Lafter. Westerland gets enough winterkill that it can easily be kept down to that size, though it would bloom better if it didn't die back.

Another question is where are you going to get these. The usual source here is Pickering, but it's late to be ordering bareroot roses. The local places have really been cutting down on the roses they carry lately.

Mad Gallica, I am ordering from Edmund's in WI. A lot of the suggestions are either too soft/pale or too short. I am mixing this with Living Easy, so it needs to be a gutsy yellow but not tacky. Veryzer's suggestion for Kordes floribunda Africa sounds right on, and Edmund's has it. Thanks so much!! I hope it takes here in NY.

Edmund's also ships bareroots. By the time you get them, it will be quite late for those. They really should be planted around the end of March. When you plant them, make sure to mound soil or mulch around the roses to keep them moist until they grow some feeder roots. Also cross your fingers that we don't have a hot spell. Even weather like we've been having is very bad for bareroots because it's so dry.

Perhaps you should order from Roses Unlimited--assuming it carries the roses you want. Roses Unlimited sends potted plants that often are already blooming. This late in the season, the potted plants would be more appropriate than the bareroots.

Edmunds just sent me a bareroot 'EASY DOES IT' two weeks ago and it was plump, green, had 5 canes, and lots of long roots. I was very pleased with it....

As of three weeks ago Roses Unlimited still had South Africa in stock.

Own-root dieback roses tend to do poorly here. Compared to the Midwest, we have a short, cool growing season. According to the heat maps, its like northern Minnesota.

What I'd do is to wait until Adams has roses on sale, and see what they have in stock. Rugosa evaporate from that place, but the floribunda/hybrid tea types sit around.

Thanks for the tips about planting so late and bare root issues in the heat. Fortunately, it's a client's house and there is irrigation - I will make sure they have it running steady and I will mound the plants. Thanks again to all of you.

I don't know about your zone but Teasing Georgia for me in zone 10 grows to be a monster - at least 14 ft. and sprawls!

Charlotte is another hardy Austin for a medium hedge. Yellow rugosas include Topaz Jewel and Agnes. Agnes does not repeat well.
