huge Marie Pavie bloom

Since I only have a camera phone, I rarely take or post photos. But Marie Pavie stopped me in my tracks today with a bloom so big that I had to take pictures of it. It's 2.5 inches across and fully double. She's been well fed, and we've had cool weather lately, so I guess that helped fatten her up. (Sorry for the blurry quality.)

Yes, the cool temps have helped to hold the pink tone longer.

I took that one this morning. All the center petals have finished opening out, so it even looks a bit fuller now. And still pink!

Sherry, I don't have spider mites, so that is not why my Marie Daley looks bad. There is some blackspot, and also what I dub "Florida Crud". Lisa at Countryside roses told me to stay away from Marie Pavie if I was no-spray, as she blackspots and gets cruddy for her. I didn't ask about Marie Daley specifically, but I'm assuming because they are related that Marie is a problem here also. This is my second try, from a different vendor, so I personnaly do not feel that these two will look good for at least half the year here in Florida, with our particular strains of fungus. For someone who sprays chemicals, she probably stays clean. I won't spray chemicals. By the way, it is too hot down here to spray Daconil. It burns the roses, so I wouldn't use it at all if I were you, unless you want to defoliate the bush for some reason. If you have spider mites, you would be able to see them if you hold a sheet of white paper under the leaves and shake them. Sherry, don't feel you aren't a smart enough mother to your roses. I don't feel Marie Pavie can be grown no-spray here and look good for a prime location. However, if you're not ready to give up yet, that is fine. All I know is I've tried this rose over the past few years, and my tolerance level is not willing to put up with it. If mine were not in a pot, I wouldn't care if Michael ran over mine with a lawnmower. Judith, you should start your own worm bin. It's fun, and they become pets. Well. sort of....:) For the most user friendly and easiest way to do it, I would suggest investing in a unit like the Can O Worms. It can be done in Rubbermaid containers, but I don't think it would be as nice to do it that way, or as easy. Sandy

I grow Marie Pavie in a large pot, too. I think this is my third year with her & mine has gotten pretty big for her pot. I've never done any pruning to her, but think I will need to cut her back some this spring. Unfortunately, mine only gets a few hours of sun once the trees leaf out...so I get wonderful wafting fragrance coming from lots and lots of blooms in the spring & fall. She repeats okay in between for being in so much shade, but usually not heavily enough to enjoy the wafting fragrance...have to smell her blooms up close then. I have Reine des Violettes planted in the ground, and after two years here, it is tall, but rather lanky (I have a support behind it, but the trellis is only about 4 ft tall, so doesn't help much). I do think it has a good fragrance & love the color and bloom form. Mine repeats fairly often, but only heavily in the spring & fall...and the summer blooms don't last too long in our heat. So far, its disease resistance has been poor here...foliage looks terrible more often than good and sometimes it completely defoliates. I don't plan to remove it, but if it were to die, I'm not sure that I would replace it due to the fungal issues. Belle gallica I got this rose for sase from Bluegirl on here. It's wonderful. When old blush was in bloom, I thought that was my favorite, then perle d'or gave a huge flush and I felt it was my new favorite, now Marie pave repeated with these wonderful perfect rose blossoms so I've switched again. Old blush is getting ready for next month's show so let's see if I change back. Cloudette soupert just gave me the first bloom and it started out as a pink bud but has bleached to a pure white. It's beautiful but I didn't smell the perfume and I really wanted a rich pink rose. It has a nice nodding habit. Think I'll have to get a dark rose and it will fade to pink. Love that fluffy cabbage bloom. Marie is still my perfect white rose. I love that perfumed semi double yellow stamens in a white rose. It's the only white for me. Cloudette was supposed to be that lovely light pink cabbage perfume. Sunny california doesn't give me the opportunity to experience many voluptuous cabbage shaped roses. Next I want a red and a tea to complete my tiny rose garden. My house eating champseys is getting bigger but hasn't bloomed yet it's going on three. Maybe it will be the pink I crave. I have ten carefree mini roses left and I'm thinking I may replace them with herbs. These old roses give me joy of life. Each old rose feels intimate, mysterious and sensual. My minis are just reliable business as usual; thinking once my pineapple fruits I may give the minis away. They're beautiful for the perfect person but these old roses have character like me.

And, look at the bud! It looks like it's made out of Ingrid's antique porcelain! I am really enjoying my Marie Pavie, as well.

I do wish mine looked that way. When it's open it's much flatter, not nearly as double, and it's white. I wonder if yours is a superior clone, such as the one Vintage was supposed to have. My plant is satisfactory otherwise, one of the few not showing any signs of mildew and growing and blooming nicely. Still, yours is so much prettier....

Hi Belle: Thanks for the pic. Marie Pavie is my favorite here. When I got her last year in cold spring, her blooms were pink. I posted that in HMF, and someone flagged it as the wrong picture!

Very pretty! I like 'Marie Pavie', too. I've seen how much larger and fuller blooms on a given rose can be when the weather cooperates: sometimes the difference is startling.

Mine has been pinkish & very big-flowered, too! (RVR band). We had extraordinarily prolonged cool weather (another front on the way). Bad for the peaches but the roses are soooo pretty.

Mine comes from Rogue Valley, too. I think they might have the same double form as Vintage.

Great looking Marie Pavie bloom. One of my favorite roses for fragrance and for growing in a container. An indispensable rose. The one I currently grow is from the Antique Rose Emporium. My blooms are almost single, so seeing the very double bloom form on yours is a nice treat. Thanks for sharing.
