Help with Southern Magnolia!

MisterTristern

I live in Eastern North Carolina where the Southern Magnolia (magnolia grandiflora) grows wild and in abundance. Last year about this time I planted a small tree (about 6 feet tall) from a reputable nursery. This past growing season, it did not grow much at all. Now I'm looking at its evergreen leaves and there is a bit of brown around some of the edges of about 30% of the leaves.

Its planted in a sunny area that has a clay loam type of soil. I felt I did everything right, so what could be going wrong? Looking for your input! Thanks!
