Ramblin' Red Hardy in NE Ohio?

Anyone else have Ramblin' Red? in NE Ohio? Helpmefind.com says that its zones are 6b to 9b, but Dave's Garden says that its zones are 4a to 8b, and where I bought it (High Country Roses) says zone 3. I know it's supposed to be very disease resistant, but how hardy will it be here? I don't want to have to winter protect, except for maybe mounding soil and mulch.

Hardy for me in zone 5a. Just pruned it today and it was one of the few climbers with little dieback. There were a lot of good canes.

I have both of them on the cold sides of my house (zone 4 pocket) and they survive and thrive equally well. It perhaps isn't a fair comparison, as Ramblin Red doesn't get as much sun, but in my yard Quadra is the hands-down winner. It blooms most of the summer, is a dark crimson-pink color with semi-double blooms, establishes quickly, and LAUGHS off the cold. Everything else in my yard was pruned down to nubbins after this past winter, even Illusion on the warmer side of the house, but Quadra only had vanity pruning to keep him in check and he's leafing out way over my head already. Both Quadra and Ramblin Red are pretty thorny with stiff canes, so train them early to grow horizontally on your support. I had Quadra as a freestanding bush for years, but it is a monster in that form. It's much happier climbing. It gets easily to 12' tall (taller if I don't do its vanity pruning in the spring) and mine is bushed out to maybe 5' wide. Both roses are bullet-proof for me as far as BS, and they can handle less than ideal situations. Ramblin Red is in its fourth year and still hasn't taken off with many blooms at all, but that may be the location it's in. It has two long central canes that are reasonably flexible, but it doesn't seem to grow the laterals nearly as enthusiastically as Quadra, which might explain the blooming difference. My favorite red rose is Veteran's Honor. In my garden, when it's compared to Mister Lincoln and Papa Meilland, VH has bigger and longer lasting flowers, more attractive and bushy shape, it's better foliated, all the way to the ground, it never gets mildew, and stays completely clean with minimal spraying. I went no-spray this year, and VH dropped some leaves due to Black Spot in September, but it still looks nice and full. Every rebloom of VH is equally beautiful and floriferous, I have not noticed any difference between spring, summer, and fall flushes. The flowers last very long time on the bush and retain their clear red color even in the heat. The fragrance of Mister Lincoln and Papa Meilland is amazing and superior to VH...when it is there, but for me, VH has fragrance any time of the day, in any weather.

Hydrangeasohio, does your detached garage go below freezing during winter? If the pots will not freeze inside, it should be OK. However, I just don't think that you will be happy with the end results if the hydrangeas stay in the pots for a number of years. They really are much happier in the ground. For this same reason, I gave up some of my hydrangeas and gave them to friends, simply because I didn't have the ground space and they were not happy in the pots over the years. They included some Kaleidoscope (oops, I can't even remember the name now!! Ouch...), Forever and Ever, Claudie etc. All I have left in the ground now are my Endless Summer, Annabelle, and a number of paniculatas! I love my Annabelle and the P's because they are so carefree and hardy. OK, they don't have the colors of the macrophylla's but then my philosophy of gardening is, if you need too much babying, you don't belong to my yard! LOL! So, to answer your question, I do NOT winter protect my hydrangeas....just too lazy to do so..... LOL

How should I get my roses ready to winter in NE Ohio?

Here is my method that I posted in my city's Rose Society. So the times are suited for here. :) I have a 100% success rate with 54 potted roses. :) Carol's Method of Overwintering Potted Roses in Garage • Keep deadheading until it's time for the roses to go into the garage. I give my last dose of fertilizing around the 2nd week of September. • In October, start watering a little bit less so the roses can experience some dryness. • When the night time temperature gets to about -6C it is time to move the pots into the garage. If it’s just one or two nights of low temperatures, I usually leave them outside…but you can get a bit of blackening of the canes. • Do not cut the plant down. Leave it as it is, but remove the leaves right to the cane. Give the rose one last really good water before using a dolly to move the pots into the garage. • Cover the roses with old thick blankets, layers of old flannel sheets or old sleeping bags when the outside temperatures get to about -20C. • The roses should experience darkness. If you have windows, then cover them with. It doesn't matter if the garage door is opened and closed. • Around March, check to see if the pots have dried out. If they have, give each rose about 1/2 cup water if they’re in a big pot (55 L are what mine are and about 22” across the top). If they’re in a smaller pot, then you should probably check them earlier – maybe early January and only give them ¼ cup or less of water. Once you start watering, you should continue once every month. • As the weather starts to warm up in the spring, the blankets can be removed. • Once the temperature gets to about 5C outside on a regular basis you can move the rose outside during the day, and recover with blankets to give protection overnight, or move back into the garage for the night. Moving the roses back into the garage is preferable to covering them…but if you have too many roses to make that feasible, then covering will do. • Water well once the pots get moved outside. The water will help protect the roots from cold. • Caveat, my garage is dry walled and probably insulated. Hope that helped, Carol

Hardy for me too here in a z4b/Idaho.
I now have 3 of them, all had very little-no die back.
Very pleased will all of them.
Here is my first, 2nd year in the garden, she is the red one in the center of the photo.

Thanks for sharing! Beautiful roses btw! I can't wait to plant mine. I bought Ramblin' Red at High Country Roses. I hear that they send potted roses, not bare root. Any tips on planting a potted rose? I also bought John Cabot at Pickering. I think they will both do well here.

The largest pink rose towards the back of the photo is one of my John Cabots, it was his 3rd year in the garden.
I have not purchased item(s) from Pickering... yet
I have however purchased several from High Country & Heirloom.
They do arrive in pots, tiny pots with a tiny plant.
Most of the ones I ordered arrived around 10-12 inches tall.
This is copy/paste from High Country's web site:
"The roses we ship are all growing in quart-sized pots, 4 1/2" square at the top and 5" deep. All are grown on their own roots and are one year old plants ."
I didn't do anything special but plant them where I wanted them.
From there they got the same treatment as the rest of the garden.
Most of the roses I purchased are doing just fine.
I did loose a few, however they were zone 5+ roses, I knew I should not have purchased in the first place :o)
Hope that helps and somebody with better knowledge will chime in.

Ramblin Red is crown hardy and almost cane hardy in my MN zone 4a garden.

Some winters I just lose the tips of canes to winter. Other winters it dies back to one to two feet. It is less hardy than John Cabot or John Davis and about the same as Quadra.

It is also susceptible to Canker which seems to be worse after milder winters. As a result, it almost always gets a severe pruning here.

It is a nice plant and worth growing. However in my climate it does not build much year over year and is not as well suited to cover a large arbor as John Cabot or John Davis

I am planting them on a 20 long 6 ft high trellis that my father-in-law and me built last summer. John Cabot on one side and Ramblin' Red on the other. I have clems planted there too. I am going to train Henryi and my Franziska Maria to climb up John Cabot, and I will train Crystal Fountain and Dr Ruppel to climb Rambin' Red. Then in the center of the trellis I have Rebecca clem, Josephine, another Henryi and Beauty of Worcester. Those four are going to climb my 3 iron trellises set within the bed. I'm overdoing the clems huh! :)
I just couldn't help myself, all the lovely clems :)
