14.5 hp B&S starts, but begins to die once warmed up

I was given a riding lawnmower with a 14.5 hp Briggs and Stratton horizontal engine. The previous owner did not care for it in the least. it appeared to have a stuck valve.

So i broke the engine down, cleaned it inside and out and cleaned the crud off the top of the piston (a fair amount of baked oil by the looks of it), and reassembled it. It has a new air filter, spark plug. the fuel filter is not new.

Now when i start it up, it runs great for less than a minute - about how long it takes to warm up. Then it begins to sputter and you can see the armatures controlling the carb pull back trying to recover it. this works for a little while, but it eventually loses. any subsequent start ups immediately fall into this behavior.

I'm pretty good at researching things once i know a direction to go - does anyone have any idea what could cause this behavior?
