Now, what are your favorite golden foliage plants?

I really like all pictures and comments in the thread about dark foliage/flower thread.

I am a big fan of bright colors in the gardens. Here are my golden plants.

1. Spiraea japonica Golden Elf. Grows in dappled shade for me. In full sun could be even brighter I guess. A dwarf variety, looks great in front of taller plants:

2. Spiraea japonica Lemon Princess - forms a very neat mound. Blooms with pink flowers, but the main attraction is the foliage.

3. Golden Oakleaf Hydrangea 'Little Honey' - lovely compact shrub for semi-shade:

4. Hostas!

5. Hakonechloa 'All gold' and 'Aureola' (Japanese Forest Grass):

6. Caryopteris - Sunshine BlueÃ¯Â¿Â½ Golden Bluebeard

Not so favorite:

1. Golden Creeping Jenny. Lovely color, looks fantastic next to dark plants, but extremely invasive. Will keep mine in containers only:

2. Golden Heucheras. Got rid of mine - very weak plants. Do not have room for under-performers in my garden.

1.) Yucca 'Color Guard' (Best variegated yellow foliage and stays nice all winter!)
2.) Dicentra 'Gold Heart' (Gold Bleeding Heart) Spectacular!
3.) Aralia 'Sun King' (Looks tropical!)
4.) Heuchera 'Citronelle' (It's not weak to me!)
5.) Heuchera 'Electra' (Not weak and has grown great for 3 years now!)
6.) Hosta 'Sun Power'
7.) Sedum 'Angelina'
8.) Sumac 'Tiger Eye Gold'
9.) Tradescantia x 'Sweet Kate'
10.) Vinca 'Illumination'
11.) Agastache 'Golden Jubilee

Also, I love Heliopsis 'Loraine Sunshine.' It's not gold, but the white in the leaves really 'pops.' It brightens up the garden and also has yellow blooms in the summer!

How can one choose a favorite? My favorite is the one that catches my eye at the moment. I don't have many photos from last year as my camera broke but DH took a few. From spring Allium and Salvia 'Caradonna' Gooseneck loosestrife Mindful of the propensity of running amok in the garden, this plant is in a pot sunk in the garden. Geum 'Blazing Sunset' a bright spot in my red bed Clematis 'Bushy Blue Bell' this is a shrub clematis that is more blue than the photo indicates and blooms from spring until frost. Adding to my own list: Hebe pimeleoides- blackish stems with small greyish/bluish/silverish leaves that creeps along the ground at about 1 foot tall. Excellent for textural contrast and unique appeal, best against large rocks and contrasting foliage of other plants. Hebe "McKean"- dwarf 1 foot tall and wide dome of bright green/yellow scaly leaves, similar in appearance to a common heather plant (although in my opinion much more exciting and beautiful). Excellent near large rocks and contrasting foliage and colors. Most Hebes like very well drained soil with moderate moisture. See link for more info Cotula hispidula- feathery fluffy soft grey/silver foliage, low creeping, with interesting yellow button-like flowers on thin stems. Likes good drainage, full to part sun, and moderate moisture. Excellent between rocks, with gravel mulch under plant crown and stems to keep the feathery leaves clean and reduce chance of rot. Plectranthus argentatus for silvery white, fuzzy leaves. Tibouchina heteromalla for silvery green, velvety leaves everyone wants to touch, plus once a year spikes of intense purple flowers. Coleus are beautiful, but I've just discovered magilla pernilla (m. perilla) which is supposedly a full sun-to-full shade perennial, with gorgeous quad-color leaves just like a coleus! I'm so anxious to see if this will do well over our damp cold winters. Just about every heuchera variety, but particularly 'Crimson Curls and 'Snow Angel'. Just gorgeous next to anything! Abutilon pictum 'Thompsonii' -- every abutilon has wonderful flowers, but the 'Thompsonii' has foliage that is a show-stopper. They're fussy, prone to aphids, need some sun but not too much, some shade but not too much, some humidity but not too much, etc. etc. But every visitor to the garden asks me what it is, and when you have as many plants crammed into different flower beds as I have, that indicates it's a real crowd-pleaser.

If you mean outdoor plants, definetly Blue Baptisia. Or blue Indigo is another name for it. Mine is 3 yrs. old, gets 4 feet across and 3 feet tall in summer. It covers half of my garage! You never have to water it or fertilize-it's part of the legume family. The foliage is a pretty silver & the flowers are purple spikes. Then it gets seed pods. Stays nice all summer. I really love it. I'll post pics this summer. Indoor plants I dont have much room for the huge ones. I am looking for a Monstera, the biggest I have are 5 1/2 feet snake plants. I have a Pothos going up a pole that is getting big too. Jen

Sorry, no pics. But Tanacetum 'Isla Gold' is a real stunner. Spirea 'Ogon' isn't bad either.

The berberis quickly goes to yellow in my zone 8B
Have another berberis that is also very yellow...Gold Pillar Sunjoy...more upright in growth, great in a pot.

Oh alina, just saw the Little Honey pic. Now that's what they're supposed to look like!! (re: my thread about LH, Hero or Zero).

Love all the golden foilage photos. Sedum makinoi Ogon is just too cute!

That picture was taken in 2010. It doubled in size since then and more than 3' across now.
This year we had a late frost and most of my hydrangeas are bitten. The foliage does not look pretty with this frost damage.
I checked it out yesterday and I have blooms on it!!! Can't wait seeing it in bloom finally.

Thanks for all these wonderful pictures guys! You are not only great gardeners. You are also very talented photographers :o)

Many plants mentioned here are new for me - had to google them...

alina, I am definitely inspired to stick with mine now. :) It must be just beautiful at 3' wide. Glad it is finally blooming!

Hmmm...I wonder if maybe I should cut the blooms off mine since it's having such a hard time getting established.
