Hi
I would appreciate some advice please.
The starter spins freely but the gear cog does not climb the bendix and engage with the flywheel under normal operation of applying 12v to the starter.
If I manually turn the gear cog it does so.
The device the cog sits against spins at the same time as the cog, I assume this should not? Is this referred to as the starter clutch?

Have you just installed a new battery? IF so, are you sure you connected the terminals correctly? Sounds to me like the battery is connected backwards.

You sir are a genius....I on the other hand an (expletive deleted) idiot.
During the Winter I re-wired the battery, solenoid and starter and yesterday fitted the new battery.
How I managed to reconnect it the wrong way round is frankly beyond me! I no longer have the old battery, I wonder if the terminals were reversed (frankly grasping at straws now!)
I'm more familiar with AC motors, both single and 3 phase, Reverse the direction of 3 phase motor by changing any 2 phases. Did not know the direction of DC motor was reversed by swapping +ve and -ve. Guess you live and learn!
Thanks again, you've saved me forking out for a new starter motor.

I don't know on that mower. I had a problem several years ago with a mower of mine. I found a service manual on ebay to load on my computer. About $10 to buy. It had all kinds of diagnostic test. I started at the battery, to the starter solenoid, the starter, fuses, safety switches, and so on. If you want to rule out the valve issue, then just roll this tractor to where your car is. Put a set of booster cables on the car battery. Put the positive cable onto the terminal on the starter that has the heavy cable attached to it. Take the negative booster cable and press it firmly against the engine block or tractor chassis with the ignition key in the "ON" position. If the engine spins over easily and starts, remove the negative cable from the engine block or tractor frame. Try this a few times. If you get the same results, then you just proved two things. 1. The valves are likely adjusted correctly 2. Your tractor has a seperate starting solenoid somewhere. So let's pretend that the above scenario has occurred. Next step. Take the booster cable off of the starting mower. Trace the heavy wire that is on the starter motor back to the starter solenoid. Put the positive booster cable onto the OTHER big terminal on this solenoid. Clamp the negative booster cable lead to a clean spot on the engine block or the tractor frame so that it makes good electrical contact. Now try starting the tractor with the keyswitch. If the clicking noise is still there, the a new solenoid should solve the problem. The clicking sound is the solenoid pulling in. However, the round disc inside the solenoid is not making proper electrical contact and needs to be replaced.

Well, time for the "off the wall" suggestions I guess? :-) Push rods- Is the compression "bump" on the intake valve? IF SO, maybe the steel push rod doesn't expand enough with the heat, (compared to the barrel) resulting in an effective increase in valve lash? Aluminum expands about twice as much per degree as steel. I think that's an avenue worth pursuing. It might be only a few thou difference, but it might be enough. IF that doesn't do it, I swap the starter, unless he's "literate" with a voltmeter. In that case, I'd check for VOLTAGE DROP across the various connections to look for an obvious trouble spots. I'd divide the circuit into 3 sections- 1 Battery + POST to + starter motor POST. 2. Starter motor POST to starter motor CASE. 3. Starter motor CASE to battery - POST. Check voltages with the engine cranking. A "perfect" reading (doesn't exist) would be 0 volts drop. If any (one of three) circuit is excessive, one can then narrow that part of the circuit to its smaller parts. Example circuit 1- Battery post to cable connector, to cable, to connector, (on other end of cable) to solenoid stud, to other solenoid stud, to starter motor stud. Typically, you'll have a lot of small voltage drops (one at each "junction") that adds up to a more substantial total drop. Circuit# 1 tests + side 2 tests the motor 3 tests the ground side. Also make sure starter is well grounded to the block. Am I rambling yet? :-)

Here's what to check: Breather hole in gas cap. Collapsing fuel line. Dirty air filter. Might look clean, might not be! Check these things first! If any of them is the problem, you'll know it. As for the fuel filter--the fact that it has no fuel in it, sort of leads me to think "plugged breather hole", in gas cap! They normally look half full, but may work the way yours is. Then, you may have a sticky float in the carburetor. Another thing to check is the main drive belt! It might be worn enough to affect performance, by slipping!

Beware, having already connected the battery to the electrical system in reversed polarity.........you may also have caused another (as yet undiscovered) problem.
Connecting the electrical system in reverse polarity can ruin a diode in the charging system, resulting in not recharging the battery when the engine runs.
So, if you find later that your battery is too weak to start the engine, you will need to check the charging output of the alternator.

OP - Also be advised that when purchasing a 12 volt battery for a lawn/garden tractor from other than the OEM, it is not unusual to get a battery with the terminal polarity physically reversed from what your original battery was..... they come both ways.

Off the top of my head, I recall reading something about the "reversed" polarity batteries have an "R"? suffix with the group number???

Mistaking the position of the battery posts as indicating the same polarity is common. As Mownie said, my next suggestion was going to be look for a fuse (I hope there was one) otherwise, you have fried the diode(s) in the charging system. I would have thought there would have smelled it and seen smoke.

I have repaired many done the same as yours.
