WOW, what a perfect way to show the effects of heat... Any roses take the heat better than that one?

My thoughts are that when buds develop in cool temps, there is no way they can take heat like that. They need to develop in the heat to have a chance of bloom in the heat. And then again, maybe none can survive 97 degrees anyhow. Too bad. We up north were hot, but not that hot.
Sorry Hoov. If it isn't a cold snap or frost, it is the heat, or the wind, or the aphids, or rust, or jbs, or powdery mildew. Hope you cool off soon!

awwwww Hoov. I'm soooooo sorry for you. You are dealing with extreme heat and here in N. Ga. it's flirting with freezing temps. I covered some peonies but I'm praying the roses can take it. The wind is supposed to blow all night so that should keep the frost off. Maybe you'll have another nice flush later! Sure hope so! April

Wow I'm sorry, I'd heard it was hot down there, that' more like the valley here. I only had one affected and that was Fragrant Plum, 1st bloom blown and burned. It only hit 90 here today. Man, I hope April temps come back soon!

I thought the Santa Ana didn't blow until the fall. We get hot up here but don't get nasty-hot until July. Your rose sure was pretty to start with. What is she?

How completely frustrating. A very pretty rose picture however. Your images really display the problem. I'm so sorry. Hopefully 'regular' weather, whatever that is this year, will return soon.

We are predicted to have temps of 23 on Saturday night. I'm ready to hunt the weather man down and give him a major scolding. After this weekend I thought spring had arrived for a moment.

In Iowa, spring is usually on Thursday. Still winter here with snow last weekend. At least we didn't have to shovel it. Although I had to scrape the windshield to my P/U this morning, hope shines eternal.

My husband came back from the midwest on Sunday and said he'd encountered snow flurries before leaving KCMO. We've had dry winds most of the weekend and temps hovered in high 80's so most of my roses look like the 4pm pic. The thrips had already created a nasty mess anyway .

Cheer up Hoov, we should be returning to the mid-70's
this week. At least it is a wake up call to the roses that
it's time to bloom like crazy.

*** This is true.
The past couple of months, however, have brought Southern CA day after day of wind-warnings.
Not JUST East winds, but also North, South, and gale-force West winds.

Since our Teas and Chinas have been blooming all along, there's been a lot of potpourri down there.

I went outside and looked around more today (it was too hot yesterday to be outside long, even in the shade) and the damage is not as bad as I thought. :^)

Intrigue (in the picture), Peter Mayle, Fragrant Cloud were badly toasted, even some foliage damage. The worst was a little Catalonia, which is dead. Just toasted dead, the entire plant. It was a poor specimen to begin with.

Some such as Top Notch which is right next to the street with reflected heat from the asphalt, showed no damage at all! Even Ebb Tide, which has very dark flowers, looked fine. I'm going to have to check the drippers on the ones that toasted. Perhaps they are not getting enough water.

It was cooler today and will be even cooler tomorrow. Thank goodness!

I am so glad that most of your roses are OK. Those photos mad me sad.

Glad to hear the damage wasn't too severe hoovb. A few of mine got sunburned on Saturday. Ours are just starting to leaf out pretty good now and our almost 80 degree day burned a few. They went into shock, didn't know what sun was. Tonight I'm protecting my fuchsia baskets because it's supposed to get pretty cold again. Freaky weather!

I was pleasantly surprised how well my rose took the mini heat-wave.

Sombreuil had a few get toasty, but still blooming like mad.

And the (full sun) SDLMS seemed to have loved the heat. Blooms stayed nice and the plants have taken a big growth spurt.

Any rose that doesn't like the 90s and 100s won't enjoy it at my house. Still I'm looking forward to normal (cooler) springtime temps.
