How Long Does Horse Manure Hang Around?

Well I was ruminating today and thought I'd share my manure experience with you folks. My vegetable garden is where our old manure pile used to be. Back in the 1960's and early 1970's we always had 2 horses, 2 steer, 3 sheep and a couple pigs. We dumped all the manure in one spot, where my present vegetable garden resides. The interesting thing is when I till my garden in the spring or turn over a spade full, I can still smell the horse manure. In fact when it rains heavily, I can still smell the horse manure. Am I crazy??? I can tell you the garden is loaded with worms. Every spade full turns up a mass of worms. Is this normal? The down side is, this location is also where my Dad threw all the rocks from his vegetable garden (I planted my orchard there). So now I have the most lovely smelling pile of rocks and worms one could ever hope for and not a bad vegetable garden either!
