Sargassum (sea weed) as compost and or mulch?

Hi all,

Living close to the coast has its advantages, but I wonder if I am looking past a potential source of compost or mulch. We get a ton of Sargassum floating up on the beaches every year where it rots and has to be collected and left in hug stinking piles. This stuff seemes to be perfect for mulch and compost, but I wonder if the salt content, if there is any at all once it is dry, would be a concern. I know fertilizers are made from it, and it is used in soups and sauces in the orient. I could gather endless pickup truck loads of this stuff every spring, is this a good source of nutrient rich compost or should I avoid it?
