Would Radio Times get big in California?

Hello all. A dear friend just told me she's mailing a "Radio Times" to me here, and I want to get an idea of eventual size so I place it wisely.

I already know that it is extremely fragrant. How large do you think it would get in zone 9?

I would plan on six feet tall and wide for safety. I have seen one at Heirloom Gardens that was that big and they are in zone 8.

Well Lance, I hope you're right...because RT would look great in a place I have for it, where it would need to get 6 x 6. I had a Princess de Nassau there, but that rose (two of 'em actually) didn't like me and she curled up her little princess roots and left in a huff for the great etheric in the sky. Thanks for the information. It seems to be a very hard rose to get, so I am grateful and excited.

Hi lynette, Excellent photo of one of the more difficult to find English roses. I planted a specimen from Pickering around 2.5 years ago near a flowering plum tree. It does not suffer from black spot but rather powdery mildew here and is quite thorny. The flowers are very full and have a strong scent, as you mentioned and are often quite large, around 5 inches across. One day I looked up in the flowering plum tree and 10-12 feet high in the tree was a cluster of Radio Times blooms! Upon closer inspection, I saw that this rose was throwing very long canes. I had no idea that this rose would do this, as all the descriptions indicate that this is a medium-sized shrub. We plan to cut the canes way back and relocate this rose to grow on a rail fence within the next month. Imagine the sight of this rose with its canes trained horizontally with clusters of hugh blooms every 6 inches or so.

rosefolly - Toytrain's blog site has a photo gallery of Gertrude Jekyll. He trained GJ as a climber - and it does look like a VERY LARGE rose. If you click onto his blog site, and then "Gertrude Jekyll's" name, it will take you to the photo gallery of this rose. You're absolutely correct about "somethings you just have to try". I bought this rose, because a lot of people say that it has a strong fragrance. I agree with that and it smells like lychees to my nose. I'd return it and buy a different one. Normally, when things blink, it's in setting mode or it's been through a power outage so I wouldn't trust my job with a clock you either can't understand or get to work properly. Look at reviews online before buying anything to make sure the unit is at least decent. I personally just use my cell phone as an alarm clock. I can set multiple alarms if need be and they can play whatever sounds I want. I am particular not a morning person and could sleep through a hurricane and need an alarm that could probably wake the dead from across the city. Also, your phone gets it's time from your carrier so it should always be right on.

@KrystalW 9b SoCal - you might check with Mindy at Hummingbird Roses. I see she lists it as AUSsal on her website. It's currently out of stock, but maybe you can get on her waitlist for next spring. She ships the roses bare root to the West coast, but all of the roses I've bought from her have taken off!

Hi Olga, I am happy you answered this, because I had remembered you said you either have this rose, or had it at one time. I am not worried about foliage diseases, because we don't have blackspot here, and I am very tolerant of mildew - probably too tolerant.

I am in 5b-6a and have a rescued Radio Times (grafted) in a pot. Thanks for the heads up. I may have to adopt that one out to a fellow rose lover who has some yard to call their own. (visitation rights are mandatory)
It is not all that big so far yet it looks bloodthirsty so a lighter traffic area would be an idea. The blooms smell fantastic. A nice touch of lemon.
