HFGH Hanging Plants

Could someone tell me the best way to hang plants in the 10X12 HFGH. I know I can't use the frame of the greenhouse. I would like to use as much space as I can. For years I used a pop-up greenhouses and you could only use shelves. I would like to get a fan, vents and auto window openers. Where would be the best place to buy them and what brand?

However, I have also been way too chicken to hang weight from my own HFGH frame. I just don't want to take the chance of adding more stress to the structure. I am not brave. But I have to admit, when I look at Funnylady's wonderful photos, it makes me jealous.

I finally talked myself out of hanging plants, but I always intended to build a wooden upright frame to hang them from. We built wooden benches that are anchored into the ground, so my plan was to add uprights and a sturdy horizontal beam. (Think goalpost shape.) This way the weight would be handled by my benches, and the GH structure would remain untouched. Just a thought.

We added a fan to our greenhouse, from ACF Greenhouses, and this part of my blog shows how we did that. It also includes links to the sites where we bought the fan, and thermostats to run the fan (and our heaters, in winter.)
Part Seven, Greenhouse Enhancements

I never used auto vent openers, but you can use the search archive here to turn up more recommendations. From my reading, the vent openers sold by Harbor Freight don't get many good reviews. Some folks say they don't last long and are not a good investment. Brands like Bayliss and Univent seem to get better reviews. Hope this helps a bit.

"Wandering Jew" - Tradescandia zebrina, I believe. Cuttings of this plant root exceptionally well. My sister gifted me with several cuttings, which I potted. Twice now, I've cut the plant back to its newest growth and then put the cuttings into the middle of the pot to promote a fuller look. Josh

Marcie, your question came at a very fortuetous time.. I just today finished installing screens on my Clearspan Prostar 12x24 Ghouse. I too was baffled on how to do so until I visited my local LOWE"S store. They have this porch creening "system" that I found fits the bill just fine. it is a plastic "profile" about inch and a half wide with two channels to hold the screening and the spline. The instructions in the link below shows an installer using wood screws to attattch to a porch BUT I had very good luck using selftapping sheet metal screws (#10-3/4") to attach the system to the aluminum frame of my intake vent( which is aluminum ) the system also includes cap strips of assorted colors to cover the screws. I've built a shelving system along the back wall which makes it extraordinarily strong--it doesn't bow-in at all anymore where it previously moved 1/2 to an inch in a typical South wind. I used 3/4" galvanized pipe for the vertical supports, and 3/4" EMT conduit for the horizontal supports, which for the front-edge of the shelves pass-thru the galvanized cross- and tee-fittings, whose threads had to be ground-down just a little so the conduit would slide-thru. I'm real happy with the way it came together--the trickiest part was getting the installation "staged" properly: 1. Grind-out threads in the fittings for the side-to-side conduits 2. Make the two vertical posts (floor flange, 36" pipe, cross, 18" pipe, cross, 18" pipe, tee) 3. Flatten one side of three 10' conduits, thread these thru fittings and posts 4. Flatten other side of 3 conduits, drill holes, put assy into place, secure sides and floor flanges 5. Weld "L" brackets into one end of short (22 1/2") conduits (twelve of these) 6. Screw short conduits into each fitting and rotate into place 7. Cut cattle panel (2"X4" mesh) and wrangle into place from the side (having taken a side panel out temporarily) Look for "Details" in my photo link below. I think I'm done now with structural issues of the HFGH. Still have to build a potting bench, and we've been shocked to learn how hot the thing gets (over 100 degrees inside in 75deg sun out). So we have to do an exhaust fan/louver intake plus prolly some shade cloth. But the GH seems strong enough now that we shouldn't have to worry about it blowing-down, though the roof vents seem to twist a lot when open and it's windy--may have to make some further mods there. Sorry Mudhouse that I didn't response sooner but I want to thank you for your blog. As my husband was building it I would read it to him (not saying he did what I told him). LOL
I still have a leak in one of the corners but started putting plants in it anyway. I did get him to put a wooden frame inside so I can hang my plants. This picture was in Sept as he was building it. I did get him to put more boards across the top so I could do all my hanging plants. I hope the picture shows up this is the first time I'm trying to post one. Loquinn I have to many plants for shepherd hooks and they don't seem to work for me.

clp1899, that looks like a great solution! Thanks so much for posting the photo. I recall having some very small leaks in my corners too, at the top of the corner posts.

As best I can remember, I used silicone caulk to fill the gaps. I wasn't worried about a few dribbles of rain, but I was worried about largish gaps that could leak out warmed air during the winter months.
